Serum lipid and lipoprotein patterns of Iranian horses.

Patterns of serum biochemical parameters vary among horse breeds. The objective of the present study was to compare serum lipoproteins of Iranian Caspian ponies with those of other horses (Arabs and Thoroughbreds) in the Iranian region. Serum lipoprotein values were determined by agar-agarose gel electrophoresis and measured by scan densitometry.

[Stroke in children: a medical emergency].

Stroke in children is an important public health problem because, even if it is 10 folds less frequent than in adults, it may have severe consequences, related to the lack of dedicated stroke network in childhood. Therefore, it is important to know the initial clinical symptoms of stroke in children as well as the lack of aphasia opposed to the great frequency of epilepsy, and dystonia. The causes are different compared to the great frequency of cerebral hemorrhage from vascular malformations, cerebral infarct from genetic, cardiac or thrombophilic origin.

The relationship between mother's parenting style and social adaptability of adolescent girls in Isfahan.

Background: Social adaptability is an important requirement of the social life of adolescents, which can be affected by their mother's parenting style (PS). The purpose of this study is to compare the social adaptability in four parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful) through which mothers interact with their adolescent girls.

Materials And Methods: This survey is a cross-sectional and analytical study on 737 adolescents that study in the all girls junior high schools in Isfahan.

Evaluation of validity of midwifery special courses in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.

Background: The aim of training midwifery student is to increase scientific and practical abilities in trainees in order to present caring health services. Then, the evaluation tools of these abilities have great importance. This study tried to evaluate the content validity, criterion validity and base validity of academic exams.

Impact of health belief modification on intention to make smoke free home among pregnant women.

Background: This study examined the effects of health education on modification of health belief and intention among pregnant women to have smoke free home.

Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 91 pregnant women completed the study in two groups. Intervention group was educated about the harms of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure.

Isolation and characterization of some moderately halophilic bacteria with lipase activity.

Lipases are an important class of enzymes which catalyze the hydrolysis of long chain triglycerides and constitute the most prominent group ofbiocatalysts for biotechnological applications. There are a number of lipases, produced by some halophilic microorganisms. In this study, some lipase producing bacteria from Maharlu salt lake located in south of Iran were isolated.

A randomized trial to promote health belief and to reduce environmental tobacco smoke exposure in pregnant women.

Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is widespread among women in Iran. This study aimed to explore the impact of education on health belief and environmental tobacco smoke exposure in pregnant women. This randomized trial was administrated to 130 pregnant women exposed to ETS.

Distribution patterns of metals contamination in sediments based on type regional development on the intertidal coastal zones of the Persian Gulf, Iran.

This study was performed to determine the variation of metals concentrations (Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu) in surface sediments based on type region development from ten sites on the intertidal coastal zone of the Persian Gulf, Iran. The metals concentrations in surface sediments varied from 0.86 to 180.

Effects of clonidine as premedication on plasma renin activity, serum and urine electrolytes and body fluids in general anesthesia. A randomized double blind placebo controlled clinical trial.

Objectives: Clonidine is a relative alpha2 agonist that's used as a premedicative drug in anesthesia in recent years. The aim was to asses the effect of oral clonidine as premedicative drug on 24 hours urine output, urine specific gravity, serum and urine electrolyte level and renin plasma activity

Method: A randomized double blind controlled clinical trial was performed in Asali hospital Khoramabad-Iran during 2004. Sixty patients in ASA class 1 and 2, were randomly selected and divided into two groups.

Effects of Selective iNOS Inhibitor on Spatial Memory in Recovered and Non-Recovered Ketamine Induced Anesthesia.

Nitric oxide (NO) is thought to be involved in spatial learning and memory in several brain areas such as hippocampus. This study examined the effects of post-training intrahippocampal microinjections of 1400W as a selective iNOS inhibitor on spatial memory, in anesthetized and non-anesthetized situations in rats. In the present work, 4-day training trials of animals were conducted.

Efficacy of prophylactic low dose of tranexamic acid in spinal fixation surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Spinal fixation surgery is potentially associated with significant bleeding, often requiring multiple blood transfusions. Concern for the risks of transfusion-acquired infection and immune modulation effects of allogeneic blood has led to the investigation of various hemostatic agents such as tranexamic acid (TXA). The investigators hypothesized that a prophylactic low dose of TXA would reduce blood loss and transfusion requirements during spinal fixation surgery.

RITA enhances chemosensivity of pre-B ALL cells to doxorubicin by inducing p53-dependent apoptosis.

The use of low-molecular-weight, non-peptidic molecules that disrupt the interaction between the p53 tumor suppressor and its negative regulator MDM2 has provided a promising alternative for the treatment of different types of cancer. Here, we used small-molecule reactivation of p53 and induction of tumor cell apoptosis (RITA) to sensitize leukemic NALM-6 cells to doxorubicin by upregulating p53 protein. RITA alone effectively inhibited NALM-6 cells viability in dose-dependent manner as measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and induced apoptosis as evaluated by flow cytometry, whereas RITA in combination with doxorubicin enhanced NALM-6 cells to doxorubicin-sensitivity and promoted doxorubicin induced apoptosis.

Changes in plasma level of heat shock protein 27 after acute coronary syndrome.

We assessed the association between serum heat shock protein 27 (Hsp-27)concentrations in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and compared them with healthy participants. Patients with ACS (n = 75) were recruited and their biochemical parameters were compared with 75 healthy participants. Heat shock protein 27 concentrations were measured from blood samples taken on admission and 12 hours after the onset of chest pain.

Classification of Iranian patients with Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia using a flow cytometric method.

Glanzmann's Thrombasthenia (GT) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive platelet disorder caused by a deficiency or dysfunction of the GPIIb-IIIa receptor on platelets, which is characterized by a lack of platelet aggregation in response to multiple physiologic agonists and a life-long bleeding disorder. Flow cytometry is a rapid and highly sensitive method that can detect reduced levels of receptors, as well as absolute deficiency. The aim of this study was to classify Iranian GT patients by a flow cytometric method, and to correlate these findings with the severity of clinical bleeding.

The effect of lipid emulsion on depth of anaesthesia following thiopental administration to rabbits.

Intravenous lipid emulsion has proven benefit in lipophilic drug-induced cardiotoxicity. Its effect in reversal of central nervous system depression secondary to overdose with lipophilic psychotropic agents remains uncertain. Twenty adult New Zealand White rabbits were anaesthetised with 20 mg.

CT-scan imaging of iron marked chorda tympani nerve: anatomical study and educational perspectives.

The chorda tympani nerve (CTN) is the last collateral branch of the facial nerve in its third intraosseous portion just over the stylomastoid foramen. After a curved course against the medial aspect of the tympanum where it is likely to be injured in middle ear surgery, CTN reaches the lingual nerve in the infratemporal fossa. Knowledge of CTN topographic anatomy is not easily achieved by the students because of the deep location of this thin structure.

Risk factors of pancreatic fistula after pancreaticoduodenectomy: a collective review.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is the most frequent complication after pancreaticoduodenectomy, results in increased morbidity and mortality, and adversely affects length of stay and costs. Reported rates of postoperative pancreatic fistula vary from 0 per cent up to more than 30 per cent. Plenty of randomized trails and meta-analysis were published to analyze the ideal procedure, technique of anastomosis, and perioperative management of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy; however, results are often discordant and clear evidence on the ideal management and surgical technique to reduce POPF rate is not yet provided.

Effect of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions on human plasma cholinesterase activity.

Objectives: Metals such as iron are needed for physiological functions of the body. However, their excess may cause serious damage including poisoning. The effects of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions on human plasma cholinesterase activity were investigated.

Unintended purge during the start-up process of a syringe pump: report of a case presented with vascular collapse.

The case of a 50 year-old woman who developed a sudden decrease in arterial pressure while she was being prepared for surgery for a fractured lumbar spine in the prone position, is reported. She was receiving propofol, remifentanil, and sodium nitroprusside via three syringe pumps through an intravenous cannula at the dorsum of her left hand. The cause of the vascular collapse was the purge of the syringe pumps during the self-check process.

Transient ischaemic attack mimics revealing focal subarachnoid haemorrhage.

We describe here 7 elderly patients with a transient neurological deficit due to a focal subarachnoid haemorrhage, identified from the Dijon Stroke Registry over 4 years. These 7 patients presented a clinical pattern marked by focal paraesthesia, with several stereotyped focal episodes (5 of the 7 cases), lasting less than 30 min (6 of the 7 cases), and associated with a cognitive decline (4 of the 7 cases). Headache was present in only 1 case.

Measuring bacterial growth by refractive index tapered fiber optic biosensor.

A single-mode tapered fiber optic biosensor was utilized for real-time monitoring of the Escherichia coli (E. coli K-12) growth in an aqueous medium. The applied fiber tapers were fabricated using heat-pulling method with waist diameter and length of 6-7μm and 3mm, respectively.

Diaphragmatic rupture with right colon and small intestine herniation after blunt trauma: a case report.

Introduction: Traumatic diaphragmatic hernias are an unusual presentation of trauma, and are observed in about 10% of diaphragmatic injuries. The diagnosis is often missed because of non-specific clinical signs, and the absence of additional intra-abdominal and thoracic injuries.

Case Presentation: We report a case of a 59-year-old Italian man hospitalized for abdominal pain and vomiting.
