Current hearing aids are limited with respect to speech-specific optimization for spatial sound sources to perform speech enhancement. In this study, we therefore propose an approach for spatial detection of speech based on sound source localization and blind optimization of speech enhancement for binaural hearing aids. We have combined an estimator for the direction of arrival (DOA), featuring high spatial resolution but no specialization to speech, with a measure of speech quality with low spatial resolution obtained after directional filtering.

Recent advancements in neuroscientific research and miniaturized ear-electroencephalography (EEG) technologies have led to the idea of employing brain signals as additional input to hearing aid algorithms. The information acquired through EEG could potentially be used to control the audio signal processing of the hearing aid or to monitor communication-related physiological factors. (openMHA) was developed and provided to the hearing aid research community as an open-source software platform with the aim to support sustainable and reproducible research towards improvement and new types of assistive hearing systems not limited by proprietary software. The software offers a flexible framework that allows the users to conduct hearing aid research using tools and a number of signal processing plugins provided with the software as well as the implementation of own methods. The openMHA software is independent of a specific hardware and supports Linux, macOS and Windows operating systems as well as 32-bit and 64-bit ARM-based architectures such as used in small portable integrated systems.

On behalf of the Medical/Psychological Pain Associations, Pain Patients Alliance and the Professional Association of Pain Physicians and Psychologists, the Joint Commission of Professional Societies and Organizations for Quality in Pain Medicine, working in close collaboration with the respective presidents, has developed verifiable structural and process-related criteria for the classification of medical and psychological pain treatment facilities in Germany. Based on the established system of graded care in Germany and on existing qualifications, these criteria also argue for the introduction of a basic qualification in pain medicine. In addition to the first-ever comprehensive description of psychological pain facilities, the criteria presented can be used to classify five different levels of pain facilities, from basic pain management facilities, to specialized institutions, to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Pain Medicine.

Arylphorins represent a conserved class of hexameric ∼500 kDa insect hemolymph glycoproteins, rich in aromatic amino acids, which are produced in large quantities at the larval stage as reserves for metamorphosis and egg development. The recently isolated arylphorin from the moth Cerura vinula is unique in being complexed to a novel farnesylated bilin. Protein sequencing suggested the presence of two different ∼85 kDa subunits.

Background: The increasing structural diversity of the neonicotinoid class of insecticides presently used in crop protection calls for a more detailed analysis of their mode of action at their cellular targets, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

Results: Comparative radioligand binding studies using membranes of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and representatives of the chloropyridyl subclass (imidacloprid), the chlorothiazolyl subclass (thiamethoxam), the tetrahydrofuranyl subclass (dinotefuran), as well as the novel sulfoximine type (sulfoxaflor), which is not a neonicotinoid, reveal significant differences in the number of binding sites, the displacing potencies and the mode of binding interference. Furthermore, the mode of interaction of [ H]thiamethoxam and the nicotinic antagonists methyllycaconitine and dihydro-β-erythroidine is unique, with Hill values of >1, clearly different to the values of around unity for [ H]imidacloprid and [ H]N-desmethylthiamethoxam.

In many daily life communication situations, several sound sources are simultaneously active. While normal-hearing listeners can easily distinguish the target sound source from interfering sound sources-as long as target and interferers are spatially or spectrally separated-and concentrate on the target, hearing-impaired listeners and cochlear implant users have difficulties in making such a distinction. Robust sound source localization is performed by the human auditory system even in challenging acoustic conditions and in previously unencountered, complex scenarios. Biliproteins are present in almost all forms of life, and many of them play vital roles in photobiology. The bilin ligand of a recently characterized 500-kDa biliprotein from an insect has been isolated and its structure elucidated with chemical and spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible, IR, MS, NMR, and CD). This blue pigment, named CV-bilin, represents a unique high molecular mass derivative of biliverdin IXα, with an unusual 10E-configuration and a molecular mass of 852 Da, corresponding to C48H60N4O10.

Every physician should be able to treat pain regardless of the specialty, but patients with a risk of chronification or chronic pain should receive care from specialized physicians and non-medical professionals.
