: Bedridden patients are at a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Passive devices such as elastic compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression are common. Leg exercise apparatus (LEX) is an active device designed to prevent VTE by effectively contracting the soleus muscle and is therefore expected to be effective in preventing disuse of the lower limbs.

A Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation Approach for a Patient With Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma and Bone Metastasis: A Case Report.

Cancer is often accompanied by bone metastasis, which may lead to skeletal-related events (SREs), such as pain, hypercalcemia, pathological fractures, spinal cord compression, orthopedic surgical intervention, and palliative radiation directed at the bone. Herein, we report the case of a 75-year-old female patient diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with bone metastasis and a pathological fracture of the right iliac bone. The management strategy and follow-up were determined by a multidisciplinary cancer board comprising physicians, physiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, and rehabilitation therapists.

Feasibility and safety study of wearable cyborg Hybrid Assistive Limb for pediatric patients with cerebral palsy and spinal cord disorders.

Introduction: The wearable cyborg Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) is the world's first cyborg-type wearable robotic device, and it assists the user's voluntary movements and facilitates muscle activities. However, since the minimum height required for using the HAL is 150 cm, a smaller HAL (2S size) has been newly developed for pediatric use. This study aimed to (1) examine the feasibility and safety of a protocol for treatments with HAL (2S size) in pediatric patients and (2) explore the optimal method for assessing the efficacy of HAL.

Voluntary-assisted Upper Limb Training for Severe Cerebral Palsy Using Robotics Devices and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation: Three Case Reports.

Background: Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) improves the motor function of paralyzed upper limbs of adults after stroke. However, in patients with severe spastic cerebral palsy (CP), the use of CIMT is not warranted. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of repetitive voluntary-assisted upper limb training (VAUT) for three patients with severe CP using a combination of robotics [Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL)] and functional electrical stimulation [Integrated Volitional Control Electrical Stimulation (IVES)].

Spiral sockets for various types of stumps in transhumeral amputees: a case series.

Background: Fitting a stump prosthesis is difficult in transhumeral amputees because of the stump's conical form. Shoulder harnesses for suspension can cause neck and shoulder pain. We developed a novel spiral socket transhumeral prosthesis to overcome these difficulties.

Investigation of amputees with prosthetic limbs at our hospital.

This study was performed to elucidate the characteristics of amputees in our hospital. We also evaluated whether the causes and characteristics of the amputations influenced the patients' prosthetic walking ability. We retrospectively examined 47 amputees in our hospital from December 1996 to April 2016 with respect to the causes and levels of amputation.

Factors affecting ambulatory ability in patients aged 90 years and older following proximal femoral fractures.

To investigate the details of patients' status on admission and at discharge at our hospital, to compare the ambulatory group and non-ambulatory group at discharge, and to assess the factors associated with ambulatory ability at discharge in patients aged ≥ 90 years with proximal femoral fractures (PFFs). Twenty patients admitted to our hospital for rehabilitation after surgery for a PFF were evaluated retrospectively. The rate of regaining ambulatory ability, presence of dementia, body mass index, serum albumin level, hemoglobin level, lymphocyte count, and functional independence measure (FIM) were assessed on admission and at discharge.

Immune Thrombocytopenia in a Child with T Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma.

We describe the case of a 13-year-old boy who presented with persistent thrombocytopenia during maintenance chemotherapy with mercaptopurine and methotrexate for T cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. He was diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) after thorough investigations for the relapse of lymphoma and was successfully treated with immunoglobulin and steroids. ITP is known to be associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma, and various types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma but rarely with T cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma or in children.
