Background: The Oncomine Dx Target Test Multi-CDx System (ODxTT) is a next-generation sequencing panel approved as a companion diagnostic for drugs targeted to corresponding gene alterations in non-small cell lung cancer. However, appropriate slide conditions for ODxTT have remained unclear.
Methods: We focused on the production of the number of tumor cells on a formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) section and the number of prepared slides, designated the TS value, and determined a TS value of ≥4000 as a target slide condition for ODxTT.
Atypical carcinoid tumours are relatively rare among lung cancers. Surgery is regarded as standard treatment for localized cases, but there is little established evidence on treatment strategies for advanced cases. Moreover, the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors for advanced carcinoid tumours is unclear.

Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) can develop intra-abdominal desmoid tumors. However, metachronous appearance of intra-abdominal desmoid tumor is rare, and its clinical course is not well known.

Here, we evaluated the possible relationship of MOB1 expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to prognosis.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 205 lung adenocarcinoma patients treated at Kyushu University Hospital between November 2007 and October 2012.
As opposed to tuberculosis, pleurisy hardly develops in patients with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection. In spite of increasing prevalence of NTM infection, little is known about thoracoscopic or pathological findings of the NTM-infected pleura. We now report the first case of NTM pleuritis with multiple granulomatous nodules in the pleura.

The relative abundance of ASCL1 and NEUROD1 mRNAs differs among human SCLC cell lines, but the expression pattern of the encoded proteins in clinical SCLC specimens and its relation to clinicopathologic characteristics of patients have been unclear.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed tumor specimens collected from 95 previously untreated SCLC patients between June 1988 and December 2017 for ASCL1 and NEUROD1 expression by immunohistochemical staining.
The pathogenesis of lung cancer associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has remained largely uncharacterized. To provide insight into this condition, we undertook genomic profiling of IPF-associated lung cancer as well as of adjacent fibrosing lung tissue in surgical specimens. Isolated DNA and RNA from 17 IPF-associated non-small cell lung cancer and 15 paired fibrosing lung tissue specimens were analyzed by next-generation sequencing with a panel that targets 161 cancer-related genes.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a fibroinflammatory condition which involves various organs. This is a very rare case of IgG4-related lung disease (IgG4-RLD) with the invasion into diaphragm. The patient was a 71-year-old man with a long-term exposure to asbestos who had a mass shadow in the left lower lung lobe, which was suspected to invade the left diaphragm on computed tomography (CT).

CD44 variant 9 (CD44v9) contributes to the defense against reactive oxygen species, resulting in resistance to chemoradiotherapy. However, the significance of CD44v9 in patients with lung adenocarcinoma is unknown.

We report the case of a 40-year-old Japanese male with an LMPM mimicking an anterior mediastinal tumor due to invasion to the anterior mediastinum, and we discuss mainly the differentiation of LMPM from an anterior mediastinal tumor. The present tumor had a long shape along the pleura, and LMPM could be one of the differential diagnoses.

The role of the BDNF-TrkB system in small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a neuroendocrine cancer, has remained unclear, however. We examined BDNF and TrkB expression in SCLC patients as well as the function of BDNF-TrkB signaling in SCLC cell lines.

The PD-L1 IHC 22C3 pharmDx assay, the only companion diagnostic for pembrolizumab therapy, has revealed that ∼30% of all NSCLCs express PD-L1 at a high level. The frequency of high PD-L1 expression in NSCLCs with known driver oncogenes has remained unclear, however.

The T790M mutation is a C→T transition mutation at a CpG dinucleotide. DNA methylation of cytosine (5-methylcytosine (5-mC)) in CpG dinucleotides is a common DNA modification; CpG dinucleotides are considered to be mutational hotspots that cause genetic diseases and cancers through spontaneous deamination of 5-mC, resulting in C→T transition mutations.

In this study, we analyzed abnormal checkpoint gene with forkhead-associated domain and ring finger (CHFR) methylation along with the above 3 mutations in 165 lung adenocarcinomas, evaluated the spectrum of each molecular abnormality, and correlated the results with clinical and pathologic variables. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction followed by direct DNA sequencing, and methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction were performed to detect these 3 mutations and CHFR hypermethylation.
