Slaughterhouse wastewater represents important convergence and concentration points for antimicrobial residues, bacteria, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG), which can promote antimicrobial resistance propagation in different environmental compartments. This study reports the assessment of the metaplasmidome-associated resistome in poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treated by biological processes, employing metagenomic sequencing. Antimicrobial residues from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that treats poultry slaughterhouse influents and effluents were investigated through high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).

Aims: This study investigated the phylogenetic relatedness of multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis recovered from an industrial wastewater treatment plant (WWTPi).

Methods And Results: The wastewater samples were plated in brain heart infusion agar (4 mg/L ceftazidime, 8 mg/L meropenem, and 2 mg/L polimixin). Four isolates recovered from four stages of WWTPi (influent, aeration, decantation, and treated effluent) were identified and evaluated of susceptibility profiles in the VITEK 2 system.

Enterococcus faecalis has emerged as an important opportunistic pathogen due to its increasing resistance to antimicrobials, mainly to vancomycin, which leads substantial cases of therapeutic failures. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), in turn, are considered hotpots in the spread of antimicrobial resistance according to One Health perspective. In this study, we present the first report of a vancomycin-resistant E.

Aims: To investigate the occurrence of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) and their clonal relationships from hospital and municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Methods And Results: Eighteen Kl. pneumoniae strains recovered from three WWTPs were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF).

Wastewater-based epidemiology can be a complementary approach for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 prevalence, diversity, and geographic distribution. It is a complementary approach regarding its prevalence and diversity, and geographic distribution. The study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread in the environment due to the overuse of antibiotics and other pollutants, posing a threat to human and animal health. In this study, we evaluated antimicrobial residues, bacterial diversity and ARGs in two important watersheds, Guandu and São João, that supply drinking water to Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil. In addition, tap water samples were collected from three different cities in Rio de Janeiro State, including the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro city.

Background: Neisseria meningitidis strains belonging to clonal complex 11 is the cause of numerous outbreaks and epidemics in the United States, Canada and Europe, accounting for 49.5% of cases of meningococcal disease caused by serogroup C worldwide. In Brazil, it is the second most frequent clonal complex within this serogroup.

The emergence of vancomycin-resistant (Efm) harboring gene and multidrug-resistant determinants is a relevant public health concern. It is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for nosocomial infections widely distributed in the environment, including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Our study addresses a genomic investigation of -carrying Efm from WWTPs in Brazil.

is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen most commonly associated with nosocomial infections, especially in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Routine surveillance cultures for carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae have become a common practice for hospital infection prevention. The objective of this study was to investigate the genetic relatedness of carbapenem-resistant carrying gene across multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme.

The diversity and distribution of Aeromonas spp. associated with virulence profiles from the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon were investigated using phylogenetic analysis of gyrB/rpoB gene sequences for speciation. The concatenated gyrB/rpoB gene sequences clustered into five species: Aeromonas punctata/caviae (n = 37), A.

The identification of fecal pollution in aquatic ecosystems is one of the requirements to assess the possible risks to human health. In this report, physicochemical parameters, Escherichia coli enumeration and Methanobrevibacter smithii nifH gene quantification were conducted at 13 marine waters in the coastal beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and conductivity, carried out by mobile equipment, revealed varied levels due to specific conditions of the beaches.

The determination of fecal pollution sources in aquatic ecosystems is essential to estimate associated health risks. In this study, we evaluate eight microbial source tracking (MST) markers including host-specific Bacteroidales and Methanobrevibacter spp. for discrimination between human, bovine, equine, and swine fecal contamination in waters intended for human supply.
