Objectives: The objective of the study was to investigate the incidence rate of postpartum-onset major depression (PPMD) and to examine associated sociodemographic characteristics, obstetric factors, and personality disorders.

Method: The study data were obtained from 302 women who delivered at a child and maternity hospital. We interviewed the new mothers on the first day of their childbirth and at 6 weeks postpartum.

Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate the incidence rate and symptomatology of postpartum-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (PPOCD), to investigate the factors associated with PPOCD, and to compare clinical characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with and without postpartum onset.

Method: The study data were collected from 302 women who delivered at a child and maternity hospital in Turkey from August 2005 to November 2005 and a control group of 33 women who were admitted to the psychiatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital during the same time period and who met DSM-IV criteria for OCD. The 2 clinical interviews with women who delivered were performed face-to-face on the first day after childbirth and at 6 weeks postnatally.

Objective. In this study, we aimed to investigate current prevalence and related clinical factors of psychiatric disorders in Behçet patients. Methods.

Objective: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder associated with high levels of depressive symptoms and lower quality of life (QoL). In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of major depression (MD) on the QoL of patients with BD.

Method: BD outpatients (n=25) and psychiatric outpatients (n=25) with only MD among the Axis I psychiatric disorders, and BD outpatients (n=25) and healthy controls (n=25) without any Axis I psychiatric disorder were included in the study.

Objective: The clinical overlaps between schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) seem to be related to thought disorders involving obsessions, overvalued ideas, and delusions. Overvalued ideas are beliefs falling in between obsessions and delusions and are stronger than obsessions but weaker than delusions. The goal of the present study was to compare patients with OCD to those with schizophrenia in terms of cognitive functions and to relate cognition and overvalued ideas in OCD.

Recent studies have suggested that neuropeptides could play previously unrecognized functional roles in peripheral gustation. To date, two peptides, cholecystokinin and vasoactive intestinal peptide, have been localized to subsets of taste-bud (TB) cells (TBC) and one, cholecystokinin, has been demonstrated to produce excitatory physiological actions. This study extends our knowledge of neuropeptides in TBC in three significant ways.

Many studies in the literature have clearly shown the increase in creatine kinase-myocardial subfraction (CK-MB) levels and changes in electrocardiography (ECG) after stroke. However, the studies on cardiac troponin T (cTnT) which is more sensitive and specific to myocardium after stroke are relatively scarce. Moreover, its associations with volume of stroke lesions and type of stroke have not been investigated thoroughly.

Taste receptor cells are primary sensory receptors utilized by the nervous system to detect the presence of gustatory stimuli in the oral cavity. These cells are particularly heterogeneous and may be divided into various subtypes based on morphological, histochemical, or physiological criteria. One example is the heterogeneous expression of neuropeptides, such as cholecystokinin and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide.

We conducted a household survey of 3,012 adults aged 18 and over in order to estimate the prevalence of DSM-IV obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in urban areas in Konya, Turkey. Trained psychiatry interns administered the 2.1 version of the OCD section of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).

Inhibition of inositol monophosphatase (IMPase) enzyme is the target mechanism of action of lithium. However, increased activity of mRNA levels by lithium has been reported. These two diverse effects were shown after relatively short periods of lithium administration.

Recent advances in peripheral taste physiology now suggest that the classic linear view of information processing within the taste bud is inadequate and that paracrine processing, although undemonstrated, may be an essential feature of peripheral gustatory transduction. Taste receptor cells (TRCs) express multiple neurotransmitters of unknown function that could potentially participate in a paracrine role. Serotonin is expressed in a subset of TRCs with afferent synapses; additionally, TRCs respond physiologically to serotonin.

Objective: The relationship between psychiatric disorders and nicotine use has been studied in recent years. In this study, the comorbidity between psychiatric disorders and nicotine dependence (ND) and nicotine abstinence (NA) was evaluated in a randomly selected group of university students.

Method: We used the 12-month version of CIDI 2.

Gustatory perception arises not only from intracellular transduction cascades within taste receptor cells but also from cell-to-cell communication among the cells of the taste bud. This study presents novel data demonstrating that the brain-gut peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is expressed in subsets of taste receptor cells, and that it may play a signaling role unknown previously within the taste bud. Immunocytochemistry revealed positively stained subsets of cells within taste buds throughout the oral cavity.

Microglia are known to express purinergic receptors for extracellular ATP of both P2Y and P2X subtypes. In the CNS, ATP is released from neurons and acts as a signal between neurons and glia. The mrf-1 gene encodes a 17-kDa protein with a single calcium-binding (EF-hand) motif and is expressed specifically in microglia.

In taste buds, synaptic transmission is traditionally thought to occur from taste receptor cells to the afferent nerve. This communication reports the novel observation that taste receptor cells respond to adrenergic stimulation. Noradrenaline application inhibited outward potassium currents in a dose-dependent manner.

Background: Bipolar affective disorder is considered to be a disabling illness with a relapsing and remitting course resulting in enduring psychosocial consequences. In this study, we aimed to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with bipolar illness, types of treatment at inpatient and outpatient settings and their outcome.

Method: Life charts of 61 bipolar outpatients and hospital charts of 47 manic inpatients were retrospectively evaluated regarding the demographics, course of illness and the treatment at both settings.

Studies on the protective effect of omeprazole, a proton-pump inhibitor, against damage to the rat gastric mucosa induced by strong irritants, are few and contradictory. We have investigated the protective effects of omeprazole and sucralfate against gastric mucosal damage induced by ethanol in rats. The study was performed on 4 groups of 10 rats each.

Objective: The effects of dopamine infusion on portal blood flow were examined in 12 cirrhotic patients (seven men, five women) in a Child-B group.

Methods: Dopamine was administered as an intravenous infusion (2 micrograms kg-1 min-1).

Results: At 0, 30 and 60 min, portal blood flow, left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions were evaluated using the pulsed doppler method.

After research studies, including systematic lateral x-rays, of normal controls and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients, we decided to perform a medial resection of the hyoid bone in OSAS patients. The procedure is similar to that performed for ductus thyreoglossus. To date, three patients have undergone the operation under anesthesia.
