Background: Patients with systemic right ventricle (SRV), either d-transposition of the great arteries following an atrial switch procedure or congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, develop severe right ventricular dysfunction, prompting appropriate medical therapy. However, the efficacy of beta-blockers and angiotensin receptor blockers or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) in SRV patients is unproven.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ACEI/ARB and beta-blockers on outcomes in SRV patients after accounting for likely cofounders affecting their use.

Article Synopsis
  • The fungal pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici causes significant damage to wheat crops through a disease called Septoria tritici blotch; it has a unique germination process that occurs slowly and randomly after landing on leaves.
  • Research indicates that some Z. tritici spores can survive for at least 7 weeks in water, remaining virulent while adapting to low-nutrient conditions by using stored lipids and altering gene expression.
  • The spores can survive even longer in soil and can be transmitted to wheat seedlings via rain-splash, highlighting the importance of understanding Z. tritici's survival mechanisms for effective disease management strategies.

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are an emerging field of cancer treatments that are becoming more widespread in their use. However, there are potential ocular toxicities associated with these drugs that ophthalmologists need to be aware of to better maintain ocular health as patients undergo rigorous medical treatment for their conditions. While many ADCs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many subsequent reports have been published regarding additional ocular side effects these drugs may cause.

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of alternating magnetic fields (AMF) combined with antibiotics in reducing Staphylococcus aureus biofilm on metal implants in a large animal model, compared to antibiotics alone.

Methods: Metal plates were inoculated with a clinical MRSA strain and then implanted into thirty-three ewes divided into three groups: positive control, linezolid only, and a combination of linezolid and AMF. Animals had either titanium or cobalt-chrome plates and were sacrificed at 5 or 21 days post-implantation.

Epiphytic microbes are those that live for some or all of their life cycle on the surface of plant leaves. Leaf surfaces are a topologically complex, physicochemically heterogeneous habitat that is home to extensive, mixed communities of resident and transient inhabitants from all three domains of life. In this review, we discuss the origins of leaf surface microbes and how different biotic and abiotic factors shape their communities.

Purpose: The purpose of this review was to summarize the different surgical approaches combining photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and corneal crosslinking (CXL), present each protocol template in a simple format, and provide an overview of the primary outcomes and adverse events.

Methods: A literature review was conducted as outlined by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. Eight different databases were searched.

Introduction: Students need to acquire high level self-regulatory skills if they are to be successful within higher education, and academics need support in facilitating this. In this article we explore how the current research gap between knowledge of self-regulatory assessment and feedback (SRAF) practices, and academics' professional training in it can be bridged.

Methods: SRAF tools were used with academics to explore their understandings of and training needs in SRAF; central to this work was the development of a SRAF scale.

Background And Aims: For patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA), factors associated with progression to end-stage congestive heart failure (CHF) remain largely unclear.

Methods: This multicentre, retrospective cohort study included adults with ccTGA seen at a congenital heart disease centre. Clinical data from initial and most recent visits were obtained.

Background: For patients with d-loop transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) with a systemic right ventricle after an atrial switch operation, there is a need to identify risks for end-stage heart failure outcomes.

Objectives: The authors aimed to determine factors associated with survival in a large cohort of such individuals.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study included adults with d-TGA and prior atrial switch surgery seen at a congenital heart center.

Most animal models of infection utilize planktonic bacteria as initial inocula. However, this may not accurately mimic scenarios where bacteria in the biofilm phenotype contaminate a site at the point of injury. We developed a modified CDC biofilm reactor in which biofilms can be grown on the surface of simulated fracture fixation plates.

Treatment of infected orthopedic implants remains a major medical challenge, involving prolonged antibiotic therapy and revision surgery, and adding a >$1 billion annual burden to the health care system in the US alone. Exposure of metallic implants to alternating magnetic fields (AMF) generates heat that can provide a noninvasive means to target biofilm adhered to the surface. In this study, an AMF system with a solenoid coil was constructed for targeting a metal plate surgically implanted in a sheep model.

The euthanasia of cane toads under field conditions presents a number of logistical and animal welfare challenges. One recommended method of control involves the use of carbon dioxide in plastic bags. This paper describes the minimum amount of time (4 h) required to efficiently euthanase toads with a carbon dioxide concentration of 4.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the outcomes and prognosis of thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in cats treated with surgical decompression.
  • A total of 35 cats were analyzed; the most common clinical sign was difficulty walking, and the majority had positive outcomes after surgery, with 62.5% improving at discharge and 91.3% at a 2-week follow-up.
  • Findings suggest that surgery leads to a favorable prognosis for these cats, irrespective of the initial severity of IVDD, but further research with larger sample sizes is needed to establish clearer statistical associations.

Thirty four-year-old male with history of D-transposition of the great arteries (D-TGA) who underwent Mustard operation at 14 months of age presented in cardiogenic shock secondary to severe systemic right ventricular failure. Catheterization revealed significantly increased pulmonary pressures. Due to the patient's inotrope dependence and prohibitive pulmonary hypertension, he underwent implantation of a Heart Ware HVAD® for systemic RV support.

Background: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing performance has been shown to be a predictor of morbidity, mortality, and quality of life in patients with Fontan physiology; however, the role of exercise performance along with other diagnostics is not fully understood. We evaluated the hypothesis that reduced exercise performance correlates with poorer quality of life in Fontan patients as they continue to age.

Methods: Chart review was performed on patients 12 years and older with Fontan who had completed cardiopulmonary exercise testing and age-appropriate quality of life surveys.

Background: Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) is universal in patients with a Fontan circulation. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of its severe expressions, and, though rare, frequently fatal. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical presentation, risk factors, and outcomes of HCC in patients with a Fontan circulation.

Background: "Work ability" is the employees' capacity to meet the demands of their job. As more patients with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) are now reaching adulthood, we assessed work ability and factors impacting livelihood in adult CHD.

Methods: The work ability index (WAI) questionnaire and patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were administered at 2 Midwest adult CHD centres from February 2017 to 2018.

Emerging fungal and oomycete pathogens infect staple calorie crops and economically important commodity crops, thereby posing a significant risk to global food security. Our current agricultural systems - with emphasis on intensive monoculture practices - and globalized markets drive the emergence and spread of new pathogens and problematic traits, such as fungicide resistance. Climate change further promotes the emergence of pathogens on new crops and in new places.
