One of the more useful tags for a protein in biochemical experiments is biotin, because of its femtomolar dissociation constant with streptavidin or avidin. Robust methodologies have been developed for other the in vivo addition of a single biotin to recombinant protein or the in vitro enzymatic or chemical addition of biotin to a protein. Such modified proteins can be used in a variety of experiments, such as affinity selection of phage-displayed peptides or antibodies, pull-down of interacting proteins from cell lysates, or displaying proteins on arrays.

Molecular beam techniques are used to grow water films on Pt(111) with various incident angles and collision energies from 5 to 205 kJ/mol. The effect of the incident angle and collision energy on the porosity and surface area of the vapor-deposited water films was studied using nitrogen physisorption and infrared spectroscopy. At low incident energy (5 kJ/mol), the infrared spectra, which provide a direct measure of the surface area, show that the surface area increases with incident angle and levels off at angles > 65 degrees .

The combined experimental and theoretical study of intrinsic hydrogen diffusion on bridge-bonded oxygen (BBO) rows of TiO 2(110) is presented. Sequences of isothermal scanning tunneling microscopy images demonstrate a complex behavior of hydrogen formed by water dissociation on BBO vacancies. Different diffusion rates are observed for the two hydrogens in the original geminate OH pair suggesting the presence of a long-lived polaronic state.

The possibility of observing neutrinoless double beta decay offers the opportunity of determining the effective neutrino mass if the nuclear matrix element were known. Theoretical calculations are uncertain, and measurements of the occupations of valence orbits by nucleons active in the decay can be important. The occupation of valence neutron orbits in the ground states of 76Ge (a candidate for such decay) and 76Se (the daughter nucleus) were determined by precisely measuring cross sections for both neutron-adding and removing transfer reactions.

Previous research has demonstrated that intra- and interpersonal rhythmic interlimb coordination are both constrained by the self-organizing entrainment process of coupled oscillators. Despite intra- and interpersonal coordination exhibiting the same stable macroscopic movement patterns the variability of the coordination is typically found to be much greater for inter- compared to intrapersonal coordination. Researchers have assumed that this is due to the interpersonal visual-motor coupling producing a weaker attractor dynamic than the intrapersonal neuromuscular coupling.

We describe a method for the measurement, analysis and display of cerebral cortical data obtained from coronal brain sections of the adult rat. In this method, regions-of-interest (ROI) are selected in the cortical mantle in a semiautomated fashion using a radial grid overlay, spaced in 15 degrees intervals from the midline. Molecular beam techniques are used to create layered nanoscale composite films of amorphous methanol and ethanol at 20 K. The films are then heated, and temperature programed desorption and infrared spectroscopy are used to observe the mixing, desorption, and crystallization behavior from the initially unmixed amorphous layers. We find that the initially unmixed amorphous layers completely intermix to form a deeply supercooled liquid solution after heating above T(g).

The adsorption, desorption, and diffusion kinetics of N2 on thick (up to approximately 9 microm) porous films of amorphous solid water (ASW) films were studied using molecular beam techniques and temperature programmed desorption. Porous ASW films were grown on Pt(111) at low temperature (<30 K) from a collimated H2O beam at glancing incident angles. In thin films (<1 microm), the desorption kinetics are well described by a model that assumes rapid and uniform N2 distribution throughout the film.

The adsorption and desorption kinetics of N2 on porous amorphous solid water (ASW) films were studied using molecular beam techniques, temperature programed desorption (TPD), and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. The ASW films were grown on Pt(111) at 23 K by ballistic deposition from a collimated H2O beam at various incident angles to control the film porosity. The experimental results show that the N2 condensation coefficient is essentially unity until near saturation, independent of the ASW film thickness indicating that N2 transport within the porous films is rapid.
