Aortic dissection is the most common thoracic aortic emergency and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Initial complications are dependent on reduction of sheer stress against the aortic wall to protect against rupture and minimize progression of the aortic wall injury. In patients with dissection starting at or distal to the left subclavian artery (Stanford type B), initial management includes strict blood pressure and heart rate control with monitoring for any complications such as malperfusion, rupture or hemodynamic instability.

Antibodies play a crucial role in monitoring post-translational modifications, like phosphorylation, which regulates protein activity and location; however, commercial polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies have limitations in renewability and engineering compared to recombinant affinity reagents. A scaffold based on the Forkhead-associated domain (FHA) has potential as a selective affinity reagent for this post-translational modification. Engineered FHA domains, termed phosphothreonine-binding domains (pTBDs), with limited cross-reactivity were isolated from an M13 bacteriophage display library by affinity selection with phosphopeptides corresponding to human mTOR, Chk2, 53BP1, and Akt1 proteins.

Until recently, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) were considered a contraindication to competitive athletics. Recent prospective observational registry data in athletes with ICDs who participated in sports against the societal recommendations at the time have demonstrated the safety of sports participation. While athletes did receive both appropriate and inappropriate shocks, these were not more frequent during sports participation than other activity, and there were no sports-related deaths or need for external resuscitation in the 440 athlete cohort (median followup 44 months).

Functional MRI (fMRI) data are severely distorted by magnetic field (B0) inhomogeneities which currently must be corrected using separately acquired field map data. However, changes in the head position of a scanning participant across fMRI frames can cause changes in the B0 field, preventing accurate correction of geometric distortions. Additionally, field maps can be corrupted by movement during their acquisition, preventing distortion correction altogether.

1The relationship between the acute effects of psychedelics and their persisting neurobiological and psychological effects is poorly understood. Here, we tracked brain changes with longitudinal precision functional mapping in healthy adults before, during, and for up to 3 weeks after oral psilocybin and methylphenidate (17 MRI visits per participant) and again 6+ months later. Psilocybin disrupted connectivity across cortical networks and subcortical structures, producing more than 3-fold greater acute changes in functional networks than methylphenidate.

Experiments investigating the properties of deeply supercooled liquid water are needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of water's anomalous properties. One approach involves transiently heating nanoscale water films into the supercooled region for several nanoseconds at a time and then interrogating the water films after they have quenched to cryogenic temperatures. To relate the results obtained with this approach to other experiments and simulations on supercooled water, it is important to understand how closely the quenched structure tracks the (metastable) equilibrium structure of water as a function of the transient heating temperature.

We study the dynamic effect of the COVID-19 shock on credit card use in 2020. Local case incidence had a strong negative effect on credit card spending in the early months of the pandemic, which diminished over time. This time-varying pattern was driven by the fear of the virus, rather than government support programs, consistent with the "pandemic fatigue" of consumers.

Understanding the properties of supercooled water is important for developing a comprehensive theory for liquid water and amorphous ices. Because of rapid crystallization for deeply supercooled water, experiments on it are typically carried out under conditions in which the temperature and/or pressure are rapidly changing. As a result, information on the structural relaxation kinetics of supercooled water as it approaches (metastable) equilibrium is useful for interpreting results obtained in this experimentally challenging region of phase space.

Motor cortex (M1) has been thought to form a continuous somatotopic homunculus extending down the precentral gyrus from foot to face representations, despite evidence for concentric functional zones and maps of complex actions. Here, using precision functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods, we find that the classic homunculus is interrupted by regions with distinct connectivity, structure and function, alternating with effector-specific (foot, hand and mouth) areas. These inter-effector regions exhibit decreased cortical thickness and strong functional connectivity to each other, as well as to the cingulo-opercular network (CON), critical for action and physiological control, arousal, errors and pain.

Absolute cross sections for the addition of s- and d-wave neutrons to ^{14}C and ^{14}N have been determined simultaneously via the (d,p) reaction at 10  MeV/u. The difference between the neutron and proton separation energies, ΔS, is around -20  MeV for the ^{14}C+n system and +8  MeV for ^{14}N+n.
