We have developed a method to analyze the substrate transport of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which are associated with drug resistance in tumor cells. Our microfluidic method is well suited to the single-vesicle estimation of substrate transport and the rapid drug screening of ABC transporters. Using this method, we have demonstrated, for the first time, the analysis of substrate transport by a single transporter and performed drug-inhibition experiments in less than 3 h.

Histopathologic examination of the surgical sample showed a solid to nested proliferation of plasmacytoid cells that showed immunocytochemical positivity for chromogranin A, synaptophysin, CD56, and estrogen receptor. Our case was diagnosed as solid NE carcinoma.

The DNA aptamer recognizes the cocaine molecule with high selectivity. We successfully detected a low concentration of cocaine (300 ng/mL, the drug test cutoff limit) within 60 s using a biological nanopore embedded in a microchip.

DMD causes respiratory and cardiac failure as well as muscle wastage. Among the various symptoms, respiratory insufficiency is a major cause of death in DMD patients at about 20 years of age.

In this study, we developed a technique that instantaneously arrays aqueous microdroplets coated with a phospholipid membrane within a single microfluidic device. The simple lipid bilayer coating effectively inhibits the adsorption of proteins and DNA, whereas the encapsulation of the droplet reduces the area in contact with the PDMS surface, resulting in decreased absorption in part.

Between 2003 and 2004, serotypes G1 accounted for 50% and G3 for 38%, contrasting with serotype G3 at 79% between 2004 and 2005, serotype G1 at 91% between 2005 and 2006, and serotype G1 and G3 at 37% and 63% between 2006 and 2007, respectively. Serotypes G2 and G9 were not detected at all during any of our time periods.

The quartz nanopore membrane (QNM) provides an excellent solid support structure for lipid bilayers in ion channel recordings due to the large electrical resistivity of fused quartz. Electrical measurements demonstrate that the leakage current through 1,2-diphytanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPhPC) bilayers suspended across a 500-1000 nm radius QNM orifice is immeasurably small, corresponding to a bilayer resistance greater than 10(12) ohms.

A polymerized ionic liquid electrolyte and platinum-free counter electrode are employed for solid-state DSSCs. We are able to prepare a thin polymer electrolyte layer on nanocrystalline TiO(2) in order to reduce the cell resistance. In addition, an electron conductive polymer (PEDOT/PSS) or a single-wall carbon nanotube gel is used with the cell as an inexpensive counter electrode instead of platinum.

Thirty medical students were randomized into two groups; the first performed tube thoracostomy on a mannequin simulator and then a porcine model; the second used only the porcine model. Performance measures included completion of subtasks, time to perform the procedure, a global score assigned by faculty raters, and a self-evaluation survey.

Nine cases of angiomyolipoma in the lung have been reported previously, and in 3 of these patients it was involved with nephrectomy for renal angiomyolipoma. The origination of the tumor was not completely recognized, but lymphangioleiomyomatosis and angiomyolipoma are known to have a common feature.

Specifically, a 12 base pair DNA hairpin attached to a 50-nucleotide poly-A tail (HP-A(50)) is threaded into an alphaHL channel using a DC driving voltage. Once the HP-A(50) molecule is trapped within the alphaHL channel, the DC driving voltage is turned off and the conductance of the channel is monitored using an AC voltage.

Deepwater rice has evolved and adapted to flooding by acquiring the ability to significantly elongate its internodes, which have hollow structures and function as snorkels to allow gas exchange with the atmosphere, and thus prevent drowning. Many physiological studies have shown that the phytohormones ethylene, gibberellin and abscisic acid are involved in this response, but the gene(s) responsible for this trait has not been identified.

However, DLBCL shows a heterogeneous response to chemotherapy, and some patients are refractory to CHOP therapy. This difference in response to therapy is most likely due to differences in biological characteristics.

Experiments using glass nanopore membranes as the lipid bilayer support demonstrate that the translocation velocities of poly(deoxyadenylic acid), poly(deoxycytidylic acid), and poly(deoxythymidylic acid) 50-mers are decreased by a factor of approximately 20 in a 63/37 (vol %) glycerol/water mixture, relative to aqueous solutions. The ion conductance of alpha-HL and the entry rate of the polynucleotides into the protein channel also decrease with increasing viscosity.
