Article Synopsis
  • Human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells are promising for regenerative medicine but face challenges like high maintenance costs and potential contamination from mouse-derived feeder cells.
  • A new culture method using highly sulfated hyaluronic acid (HA-HS) allows for the maintenance of hiPS cells without the need for feeders or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), which is typically costly.
  • This study highlights the specific benefits of HA-HS in preserving the undifferentiated state and pluripotency of hiPS cells, offering a potential solution to current limitations in stem cell culture.

An anionic π molecule can form an aggregate when a multi-interactivity is introduced, in sharp contrast to common anionic molecules that are generally difficult to stack on each other. We found that a multi-interactive ligand, 2,5,8-tri(4'-pyridyl)-1,3,4,6,7,9-hexaazaphenalenate (TPHAP ) exhibited a large Stokes shift and an intramolecular charge transfer, both of which were sensitive to hydrogen-bonding media. An anionic potassium salt of TPHAP in methanol formed various aggregation states depending on the concentration examined; this was revealed by steady-state spectroscopic and fluorescence lifetime measurements.

Article Synopsis
  • Formation of coordination networks involves various synthetic strategies, with gas-phase synthesis being relatively unexplored compared to solution and solid-state methods.
  • Researchers successfully created two-dimensional coordination networks by reacting ZnX (X=I, Br) with the redox-active ligand HTPDAP, revealing a new Zn halide trimeric cluster through advanced analysis techniques.
  • The study also discovered unexpected chemical transformations during the oxidation of these networks, resulting in a nitrated derivative of HTPDAP, highlighting unique redox processes.

Castleman disease (CD) describes a spectrum of heterogeneous disorders defined by characteristic lymph node histopathology. Enlarged lymph nodes demonstrating CD histopathology can occur in isolation (unicentric CD; UCD) sometimes accompanied by mild symptoms, or at multiple sites (multicentric CD, MCD) with systemic inflammation and cytokine-driven multi-organ dysfunction. The discovery that Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus/human herpesvirus (HHV)-8 drives MCD in a subset of patients has led to the hypotheses that UCD and MCD patients with negative HHV-8 testing by conventional methods may represent false negatives, or that these cases are driven by another virus, known or unknown.

Many patients in mental health settings are likely to have histories of interpersonal traumatic experiences. Mental health providers are recommended to adopt trauma-informed care (TIC) to ensure sensitivity and responsiveness to the impact of trauma on patients. However, few studies have examined the effectiveness of a TIC training programme using standardized measures with follow-up assessments.

SBT2171 (LH2171) has been reported to ameliorate the development of autoimmune diseases, such as collagen-induced arthritis and experimental autoimmune encephalitis in mice and inhibit interleukin (IL)-6 production in antigen-presenting cells . Regulation of cytokine production by antigen-presenting cells might be critical for the anti-inflammatory function of LH2171 in autoimmune diseases. However, the mechanism and contributing components of LH2171-mediated inhibition of IL-6 production are unclear.

Chiral self-sorting has great potential for constructing new complex structures and determining chirality-dependent properties in multicomponent mixtures. However, it is still of great challenge to achieve high fidelity chiral self-discrimination. Besides, the researches on the coordination polymers or metal-organic frameworks for micro/nanooptoelectronics are still rare due to their low conductivity and difficulty in developing a rapid and simple scale-up synthetic method.

The number of Takayasu arteritis (TAK) cases being diagnosed at an advanced age has increased, including some who develop ischemic lesions without inflammation of the involved arteries long after the onset of TAK. However, few histopathological analyses of such patients without immunosuppressive therapy have been reported. We herein report a 92-year-old woman with atypical aortic coarctation complicating TAK who underwent bypass graft surgery and survived for 23 years without immunosuppressive therapy.

Comprehensive LC-MS and MS/MS analysis of the crude venom extract from the solitary eumenine wasp revealed the component profile of this venom mostly consisted of small peptides. The major peptide components, eumenine mastoparan-EM1 (EMP-EM1: LKLMGIVKKVLGAL-NH₂) and eumenine mastoparan-EM2 (EMP-EM2: LKLLGIVKKVLGAI-NH₂), were purified and characterized by the conventional method. The sequences of these new peptides are homologous to mastoparans, the mast cell degranulating peptides from social wasp venoms; they are 14 amino acid residues in length, rich in hydrophobic and basic amino acids, and C-terminal amidated.

Rationale: Crystalline light chain inclusion-associated kidney disease affects mainly tubular epithelial cells and is often clinically manifested as Fanconi syndrome. However, only very few case reports about the crystalline deposits within the podocytes are available, and the nature of the pathogenic monoclonal light chain implicated in these cases is still unknown. We report a case of crystalline inclusion-associated kidney disease manifested as crystalline podocytopathy in which we identified the complete structure of the pathogenic monoclonal light chain as belonging to the germ-line gene of Vκ1-39.
