Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the relationship between clinical inflammatory markers and the dosage of unfractionated heparin (UFH) needed during lung transplants using veno-arterial ECMO.
  • Out of 27 patients studied, those who required an increased UFH dosage had significantly lower activated clotting time (ACT) and higher white blood cell (WBC) counts shortly after starting ECMO.
  • The findings suggest that higher WBC counts may indicate the need to raise UFH dosages, but further research is needed to better understand this relationship.

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Article Synopsis
  • The letter details a study by the ATLAS experiment measuring the nuclear modification factor (R_{AA}) of large-radius jets in high-energy Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV using data from both Pb+Pb and proton-proton (pp) collisions.
  • The large-radius jets were analyzed using a specific reconstruction algorithm and were measured across a set range of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity.
  • The findings indicate that jets with a more complex internal structure experience greater energy loss (quenching) compared to simpler jets, which provides insights into how jet structure influences jet suppression in nuclear matter.

L-Lactate is increasingly appreciated as a key metabolite and signaling molecule in mammals. However, investigations of the inter- and intra-cellular dynamics of L-lactate are currently hampered by the limited selection and performance of L-lactate-specific genetically encoded biosensors. Here we now report a spectrally and functionally orthogonal pair of high-performance genetically encoded biosensors: a green fluorescent extracellular L-lactate biosensor, designated eLACCO2.

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions.

This study assessed whether perioperative management is associated with postoperative acute exacerbations (AEs) in interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients. Using secondary data from the study "Postoperative acute exacerbation of interstitial lung disease: a case-control study," we compared the perioperative clinical management of the AE and non-AE groups (1:4 case-control matching) selected by sex, year of surgery (2009-2011, 2012-2014, and 2015-2017), and multiple surgeries within 30 days. We compared 27 and 108 patients with and without AEs, respectively.

Despite the availability of nano and submicron-sized additive materials, the controlled incorporation and utilization of these additives remain challenging due to their difficult handling ability and agglomeration-prone properties. The formation of composite granules exhibiting unique microstructure with desired additives distribution and good handling ability has been reported using the electrostatic integrated granulation method. This study demonstrates the feasible controlled incorporation of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) sheets with alumina (AlO) particles, forming AlO-hBN core-shell composite granules.

Anodic TiO nanotube arrays (TNTAs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties. In this work, the tube length of TNTAs was optimized for efficient PEC water splitting under two different conditions, in which very few or a massive amount of gas bubbles were generated on the electrodes. As a result, relatively longer TNTAs were found to be preferable for higher PEC performance when a larger number of bubbles were generated.

Although anodic nanoporous (ANP) WO has gained a lot of attention for photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS), there is still a lack of efficient WO-based photoanodes with sufficient light absorption and good e/h separation and transfer. The decoration of ANP WO with narrow bandgap semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) can enhance charge carrier transfer while reducing their recombination, resulting in a high PEC efficiency. In this study, ANP WO was synthesized via an anodic oxidation process and then modified with BiS QDs via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) process and examined as a photoanode for PEC-WS under ultraviolet-visible illumination.

Controlled incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with alumina (AlO) and zirconia (ZrO) nanoparticles using an electrostatic nano-assembly method for the fabrication of homogeneous CNT-incorporated AlO-ZrO and CNT-incorporated shell-layer AlO-ZrO composite granules is demonstrated. The spark-plasma-sintered CNT-incorporated shell-layer AlO-ZrO artifact exhibited approximately 15 times higher electrical conductivity than a homogeneous CNT-incorporating artifact. This novel composite granule fabrication method using an electrostatic integrated assembly of colloidal nanomaterials would be beneficial for the development of multiscale and multicomponent composite materials.
