Z boson events at the Large Hadron Collider can be selected with high purity and are sensitive to a diverse range of QCD phenomena. As a result, these events are often used to probe the nature of the strong force, improve Monte Carlo event generators, and search for deviations from standard model predictions. All previous measurements of Z boson production characterize the event properties using a small number of observables and present the results as differential cross sections in predetermined bins.

High-energy nuclear collisions create a quark-gluon plasma, whose initial condition and subsequent expansion vary from event to event, impacting the distribution of the eventwise average transverse momentum [P([p_{T}])]. Disentangling the contributions from fluctuations in the nuclear overlap size (geometrical component) and other sources at a fixed size (intrinsic component) remains a challenge. This problem is addressed by measuring the mean, variance, and skewness of P([p_{T}]) in ^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb and ^{129}Xe+^{129}Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been implicated as critical mediators in the progression, chemoresistance and metastatic capabilities of diverse malignancies, including osteosarcoma (OS). The authors have succeeded in generating CSC‑like cells (MG‑OKS) from the OS cell line MG‑63 by transducing defined factors. A significant increase in small proline‑rich protein 1A (SPRR1A) expression, a cross‑linked envelope protein in keratinocytes, was observed in MG‑OKS cells.

This study developed a system to reduce the treatment planning time for cervical cancer brachytherapy. An in-house Excel spreadsheet was developed to streamline dosimetric evaluation by combining external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy doses, while also displaying daily dose constraints, a novel feature of the system. This system was validated in 46 consecutive patients who underwent intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy using several applicators and required more complex dose calculation procedures than intracavitary brachytherapy alone.

Myxofibrosarcoma, a rare malignant tumor, predominantly affects the extremities of the elderly. Because of its invasive nature amputation is sometimes required, resulting in serious deterioration of quality of life. Therefore, cell lines established from amputated surgical specimens of myxofibrosarcoma in the upper limbs of elderly patients were used to create a myxofibrosarcoma-bearing animal model and to investigate the therapeutic effect of BNCT thereon.

The treatment options for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) are surgery, thyroid stimulating hormone suppression, radioactive iodine, and multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The role of external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for DTC is controversial because of the lack of randomized controlled trials, but prospective single-arm studies and propensity score matching analyses have shown its efficacy and safety. This review discusses the role of EBRT after resection of gross disease, when there is a high risk of locoregional failure, as well as its role for locoregionally gross recurrent and unresectable disease.

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products.

Article Synopsis
  • - The ATLAS experiment at the LHC conducted a search for long-lived particles (LLPs) using a large dataset (140 fb^{-1}) from proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, focusing on LLPs with masses from 5 to 55 GeV that decay within the inner detector.
  • - The study considered scenarios where LLPs are produced from exotic Higgs boson decays and models involving axionlike particles (ALPs).
  • - No significant findings above expected background levels were detected, leading to the establishment of upper limits on various production rates involving the Higgs boson and the top quark related to LLPs and ALPs.

The micronutrient vitamin C is essential for the maintenance of skeletal muscle health and homeostasis. The pro-myogenic effects of vitamin C have long been attributed to its role as a general antioxidant agent, as well as its role in collagen matrix synthesis and carnitine biosynthesis. Here, we show that vitamin C also functions as an epigenetic compound, facilitating chromatin landscape transitions during myogenesis through its activity as an enzymatic cofactor for histone H3 and DNA demethylation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the associated production of Higgs and W bosons, focusing on how the relative signs of the Higgs couplings to W and Z bosons impact the process.
  • Two specific searches were conducted using large amounts of collision data from the LHC to analyze different coupling scenarios: one for opposite-sign couplings and another for same-sign (standard model-like) couplings.
  • The results significantly exclude the opposite-sign coupling hypothesis and set a strict upper limit on the production rate of this process compared to standard model predictions.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how mismatched residual mitral regurgitation (MR) and left atrial pressure (LAP) after a specific heart procedure (TEER) can negatively impact clinical outcomes in patients with severe MR and heart failure.
  • - Researchers categorized 1,477 patients into three groups based on their MR and LAP levels, finding that those with mismatched or poor conditions faced higher risks of death and heart failure hospitalization compared to those in an optimal state.
  • - Six key factors were identified as predictors of hemodynamic mismatch after TEER, including body mass index and pre-procedural pressures, suggesting that monitoring these could help improve patient outcomes.

The cell signaling molecules nitric oxide (NO) and Ca regulate diverse biological processes through their closely coordinated activities directed by signaling protein complexes. However, it remains unclear how dynamically the multicomponent protein assemblies behave within the signaling complexes upon the interplay between NO and Ca signals. Here we demonstrate that TRPC5 channels activated by the stimulation of G-protein-coupled ATP receptors mediate Ca influx, that triggers NO production from endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), inducing secondary activation of TRPC5 via cysteine S-nitrosylation and eNOS in vascular endothelial cells.

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139  fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model W, Z, or h bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30-100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.
