Microsatellite instability-high/mismatch repair deficiency is one of biomarkers predicting the response to pembrolizumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor for metastatic solid tumors. A 44-year-old woman with stage IIIC right breast cancer was treated with mastectomy and axillary node dissection after primary systemic chemotherapy followed by radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy. Eighteen months after surgery, recurrent diseases were revealed and refractory to multiple treatments.

Background: The quality of end-of-life (Q-EOL) care is influenced by various factors such as resources for palliative care (PC). We introduced a multi-professional expert team (MET) in 2014, which provides home-based care for children and adolescents with incurable cancer. This study investigated the impacts of the outreach activities by the MET on Q-EOL care of pediatric oncology patients.

A case of successful local treatment for metachronous oligometastases to the lung and mediastinal lymph nodes in a postmenopausal woman with breast cancer is presented. A 44-year-old woman underwent partial mastectomy and left axillary lymph node dissection for right breast cancer. Thirteen years and 3 months after the operation, she was referred to our hospital for a right lung mass detected by mass screening and diagnosed with a metastatic lung tumor from left breast cancer following CT-guided biopsy.

Article Synopsis
  • * The patient underwent left mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and follow-up treatments including chemotherapy and endocrine therapy.
  • * ACC in the breast is classified as low-grade and triple-negative, suggesting a better prognosis, but more cases are needed for better understanding and developing treatment strategies.

Aim: Radical trachelectomy (RT) with pelvic lymphadenectomy has become an option for young patients with early invasive uterine cervical cancer who decide to maintain their fertility. However, this operative method entails a high risk for the following pregnancy due to its radicality. Therefore, RT for pregnant patients can be a challenge both for gynecologic oncologists and obstetricians.

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most destructive diseases of rice (Oryza sativa) worldwide. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of a novel ethylene response factor (ERF) gene, OsERF83, which was expressed in rice leaves in response to rice blast fungus infection. OsERF83 expression was also induced by treatments with methyl jasmonate, ethephon, and salicylic acid, indicating that multiple phytohormones could be involved in the regulation of OsERF83 expression under biotic stress.

Article Synopsis
  • All photosynthetic organisms experience photoinhibition, which can be detrimental in extreme environments, making it crucial to analyze how varying light conditions affect their ecological behaviors.
  • The study assessed how different wavelengths of light affect the photoinactivation of photosystem II in three species from East Antarctica, using advanced spectrograph techniques.
  • Findings showed significant differences in photoinactivation responses: lichen was the most resistant across all wavelengths, while the bryophyte was particularly sensitive to UV-B, and the green alga demonstrated higher sensitivity to UV-A, highlighting that P. crispa has to expend more energy to recover from light damage than the other two species.

For young growing children before the end of skeletal maturity, the growth activity of the grafted bone after hemimandibulectomy is not well-known. After an adolescence, such a patient may have facial deformity because the anterior growth point of the mandible is in the condylar neck. A 13-year-old boy was performed hemimandibulectomy with immediate mandibular reconstruction by fibula free flap (FFF) because of a huge ameloblastic fibroma.

GfsF is a multifunctional P450 monooxygenase that catalyzes epoxidation and subsequent hydroxylation in the biosynthesis of macrolide polyketide FD-891. Here, we describe the biochemical and structural analysis of GfsF. To obtain the structural basis of a dual-function reaction, we determined the crystal structure of ligand-free GfsF, which revealed GfsF to have a predominantly hydrophobic substrate binding pocket.

One of the most important prognostic factors in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the presence of lymph node metastasis. Therefore, the early detection of late-presenting cervical lymph node metastasis is important. Although many studies have assessed diagnostic modalities for detecting metastatic cervical lymph nodes, no study has evaluated the process, especially first signs, for detecting late-presenting cervical lymph node metastasis.

Ratoon stunting disease (RSD), caused by the bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli, is arguably one of the most devastating diseases of sugarcane. Four diagnostic techniques were compared for 100 fields of sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids) of unknown infection status.

This clinico-statistical study includes 597 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma treated at the Maxillofacial Surgery Section of Tokyo Medical and Dental University between January 2002 and December 2011. There were 373 male and 224 female patients (male to female ratio, 1.7 : 1), and the median age was 67 years.

Unified synthesis of FD-891 analogs and their structure-activity relationship are described. By using stereoselective allylation/crotylation and Evans aldol chemistry, six side-chain fragments having different length and terminus were synthesized. These fragments were coupled with a macrolactone fragment, improved synthesis of which was also developed here, to generate FD-891 and five truncated analogs.

A concise and unified strategy for the synthesis of C1-C18 macrolactone fragments of FD-891 and FD-892 as well as their analogues is reported. The strategy includes a stereoselective vinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction (VMAR) using chiral silyl ketene N,O-acetal to construct C6-C7 stereocenters, an E-selective ring closing metathesis to construct a C12-C13 olefin, and stereodivergent construction of a C8-C9 epoxide.

Premise Of The Study: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data are widely used for single-nucleotide polymorphism discovery and genetic marker development in species with limited available genome information. We developed microsatellite primers for the Proteaceae nut crop species Macadamia integrifolia and assessed cross-species transferability in all congeners to investigate genetic identification of cultivars and gene flow. •

Methods And Results: Primers were designed from both raw and assembled Illumina NGS paired-end reads.

We have developed a fluorogenic NAD(P)(+) detection method using 2-acetylbenzofuran. The reaction of NAD(P)(+) with 2-acetylbenzofuran produced a fluorescent product, allowing the highly-sensitive and quick detection of NAD(P)(+). This method was successfully applied to the detection of P450 substrates in the microtiter-plate format.

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are benign tumors, characterized by the presence of ghost cells and calcified materials. We evaluated clinical characteristics of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors in 21 cases at the Maxillofacial Surgery, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, between January 1979 and December 2006. Of the 21 lesions that were studied, 12 were observed in male patients, and 9 in female patients.

Background: Thoracoscopic surgery has replaced conventional sternotomy or thoracotomy for resection of mediastinal parathyroid lesions. We review our experience with this type of surgery with reference to selection of the appropriate approach and the pitfalls of lesion localization before and during surgery.

Methods: During a 14-year period, we treated 14 patients with hyperparathyroidism, in whom a mediastinal lesion had been localized preoperatively by sestamibi scan.
