A 44-year-old woman with stage IIIC right breast cancer was treated with mastectomy and axillary node dissection after primary systemic chemotherapy followed by radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy. Eighteen months after surgery, recurrent diseases were revealed and refractory to multiple treatments.

Impact of a multi-professional expert team on EOL care of children with cancer.

Background: The quality of end-of-life (Q-EOL) care is influenced by various factors such as resources for palliative care (PC). We introduced a multi-professional expert team (MET) in 2014, which provides home-based care for children and adolescents with incurable cancer. This study investigated the impacts of the outreach activities by the MET on Q-EOL care of pediatric oncology patients.

A case of successful local treatment for metachronous oligometastases to the lung and mediastinal lymph nodes in a postmenopausal woman with breast cancer is presented. A 44-year-old woman underwent partial mastectomy and left axillary lymph node dissection for right breast cancer. Thirteen years and 3 months after the operation, she was referred to our hospital for a right lung mass detected by mass screening and diagnosed with a metastatic lung tumor from left breast cancer following CT-guided biopsy.

Obstetrical prognosis of patients who underwent vaginal radical trachelectomy during pregnancy.

Aim: Radical trachelectomy (RT) with pelvic lymphadenectomy has become an option for young patients with early invasive uterine cervical cancer who decide to maintain their fertility. However, this operative method entails a high risk for the following pregnancy due to its radicality. Therefore, RT for pregnant patients can be a challenge both for gynecologic oncologists and obstetricians.

The rice ethylene response factor OsERF83 positively regulates disease resistance to Magnaporthe oryzae.

Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most destructive diseases of rice (Oryza sativa) worldwide. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of a novel ethylene response factor (ERF) gene, OsERF83, which was expressed in rice leaves in response to rice blast fungus infection. OsERF83 expression was also induced by treatments with methyl jasmonate, ethephon, and salicylic acid, indicating that multiple phytohormones could be involved in the regulation of OsERF83 expression under biotic stress.

For young growing children before the end of skeletal maturity, the growth activity of the grafted bone after hemimandibulectomy is not well-known. Substrate Recognition by a Dual-Function P450 Monooxygenase GfsF Involved in FD-891 Biosynthesis.

GfsF is a multifunctional P450 monooxygenase that catalyzes epoxidation and subsequent hydroxylation in the biosynthesis of macrolide polyketide FD-891. Here, we describe the biochemical and structural analysis of GfsF. To obtain the structural basis of a dual-function reaction, we determined the crystal structure of ligand-free GfsF, which revealed GfsF to have a predominantly hydrophobic substrate binding pocket.

First signs of late-presenting cervical lymph node metastasis in oral cancers during follow-up.

One of the most important prognostic factors in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the presence of lymph node metastasis. Therefore, the early detection of late-presenting cervical lymph node metastasis is important. Clinical Study of 597 Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas in Our Department - Especially about 318 Tongue Carcinoma.

This clinico-statistical study includes 597 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma treated at the Maxillofacial Surgery Section of Tokyo Medical and Dental University between January 2002 and December 2011. There were 373 male and 224 female patients (male to female ratio, 1.7 : 1), and the median age was 67 years.

Synthesis and structure-activity relationship study of FD-891: importance of the side chain and C8-C9 epoxide for cytotoxic activity against cancer cells.

Unified synthesis of FD-891 analogs and their structure-activity relationship are described. By using stereoselective allylation/crotylation and Evans aldol chemistry, six side-chain fragments having different length and terminus were synthesized. We have developed a fluorogenic NAD(P)(+) detection method using 2-acetylbenzofuran. The reaction of NAD(P)(+) with 2-acetylbenzofuran produced a fluorescent product, allowing the highly-sensitive and quick detection of NAD(P)(+). This method was successfully applied to the detection of P450 substrates in the microtiter-plate format.

[Clinicopathological study of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors].

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are benign tumors, characterized by the presence of ghost cells and calcified materials. We evaluated clinical characteristics of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors in 21 cases at the Maxillofacial Surgery, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, between January 1979 and December 2006. Of the 21 lesions that were studied, 12 were observed in male patients, and 9 in female patients.

Thoracoscopic removal of mediastinal parathyroid lesions: selection of surgical approach and pitfalls of preoperative and intraoperative localization.

Background: Thoracoscopic surgery has replaced conventional sternotomy or thoracotomy for resection of mediastinal parathyroid lesions.
