We compared a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay with primers specific for the 16S rRNA gene of Ureaplasma urealyticum with culture techniques for detecting U. urealyticum from urethral swab samples obtained from 256 asymptomatic men. Of 24 samples positive for U.

To quantitate the developmental changes in selenium-dependent cellular glutathione peroxidase during the perinatal period, tissue sections from foetal (day 12 to day 22) and neonatal (day 6) rats were stained immunohistochemically using specific polyclonal antiserum. The intensity of the staining was quantified by fluorescence microscopy image analysis. There was a general trend of enriched glutathione peroxidase in the epithelial linings and metabolically active sites.

A case of soft renal calculi with xanthogranulomatous change is reported. A 37-year-old female visited our hospital on February 4, 1992 complaining of frequency of urination and right lower abdominal pain. Under the clinical diagnosis of right renal calculi, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was attempted, but no sign of destruction was observed.

To understand the role of estrogen in the pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia, expressions of estrogen receptor (ER) mRNA and ER protein by in situ hybridization and by immunohistochemistry, respectively, were investigated in human prostatic tissues. In non-malignant region, ER mRNA and ER protein were found in cytoplasm and nucleus, respectively, of stromal cells, but not in glandular epithelial and basal cells. In benign regions, ER mRNA/ER protein positive cells were found in fibromyoadenomatous and myoadenomatous hyperplasia, but not in adenomatous hyperplasia.

A 73-year-old male with low abdominal pain on urination and frequent urination was diagnosed as poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of prostate. He received endocrine therapy with DESD and bilateral orchiectomy. This treatment was not effective, so he was given intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy with MTX, ADM and CDDP using the reservoir system.

We treated a case of ACTH-independent bilateral adrenocortical macronodular hyperplasia (AIMAH), a rare disease. The patient was a 49 year-old man having chief complaints of facial edema, muscle wasting and typical Cushing's syndrome symptoms. He was diagnosed with AIMAH by specific hormonal tests for Cushing's syndrome and CT scan.

Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of dopamine and norepinephrine, and therefore is of significant interest as a candidate gene in studies of affective disorders. We have carried out the linkage study between the susceptibility gene for affective disorder and tetranucleotide polymorphism of TH gene in five Japanese pedigrees. In addition to the linkage approach, we have undertaken an allelic association study using 74 patients with affective disorder and 78 controls with polymorphisms at the TH gene and the nearby dopamine D4 receptor gene.

We report two siblings, a 9-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl, with ACTH insensitivity. They were referred to our hospital because of pigmentation of the skin. They had normal plasma cortisol and urinary 17-OHCS levels despite markedly high plasma ACTH, and these did not respond to consecutive 3-day ACTH-Z administration, but plasma aldosterone responded normally to increased plasma renin activity after a low sodium diet.

A 69-year-old woman visited our hospital with complaints of low grade fever and general fatigue in October 1990. Computed tomography (CT), ultrasonogram, and renal arteriography showed left renal tumor and she was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (T2M0N0). Left radical nephrectomy was performed in December 12, 1990.

Eight quinolone-resistant clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were shown to carry mutations in their GyrA proteins. Six isolates had a single amino acid change of serine to phenylalanine at the position corresponding to Ser-83 in Escherichia coli. In addition to the change of serine to phenylalanine, two isolates had another change of aspartic acid to asparagine at the position corresponding to Asp-87 in E.

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels after total prostatectomy or radiation therapy to localized prostate cancer and also during endocrine therapy are within normal range. Therefore, it is necessary to use hyper sensitive PSA assay kits for early detection of relapse. The present study was undertaken to evaluate two hyper sensitive assay kits (Delfia kit, lower limit 0.

To clarify the role of neuropeptides in dyskinesia induced by iminodipropionitrile (IDPN), the levels of five representative neuropeptides were examined in discrete regions of the rat brain 4 weeks after intraperitoneal injection of IDPN. The five neuropeptides examined were methionine-enkephalin (Met-Enk), substance P (SP) and somatostatin, which are closely related to extrapyramidal function, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8), which are closely related to the neural mechanism of the dopamine system. IDPN pretreatment significantly increased Met-Enk in the basal ganglia but not SP or somatostatin; however, all three neuropeptide levels were increased in the hindbrain.

Clinical evaluation of TANDEM PSA which is the most frequently used prostate specific antigen (PSA) assay method in the world and a comparison with other methods were performed in Japanese cases in a cooperative research fashion. The minimum detectable level of the method was found to be 0.50 ng of PSA in one ml of serum and 1.

Mycoplasma genitalium causes urethritis in non-human primates, but studies on its pathogenicity in man have been hampered by the difficulty in isolating this oragnism in culture. We have used a specific polymerase chain reaction to examine the role of M. genitalium in non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU).

We report a case of metachronous bilateral malignant lymphoma of the testis. A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of left scrotal swelling with swelling of the left inguinal lymph node. Left high orchiectomy and dissection of the left inguinal lymph node were done under the diagnosis of the testicular tumor.

The clinical efficacy of temafloxacin (TMFX) was evaluated in the patients with acute prostatitis (AP: 31 cases) and chronic prostatitis (CP: 75 cases), and the criteria for clinical evaluation on bacterial prostatitis by the Japanese UTI Committee were re-examined. The clinical efficacy of TMFX on prostatitis was examined. The number of the evaluable cases by doctors in charge were 30 and 68 for AP and CP, respectively.
