Introduction: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of motor neurons, leading to limb paralysis and respiratory failure.

Methods: C1-C3 cord (1) H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1) H-MRS) was performed in 19 patients with ALS and 20 controls. N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds, creatine plus phosphocreatine (Cr), and myo-Inositol (m-Ins) were measured.

Cardiovascular responses to chemical stimulation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus in the rat: role of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus.

The mechanism of cardiovascular responses to chemical stimulation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARCN) was studied in urethane-anesthetized adult male Wistar rats. At the baseline mean arterial pressure (BLMAP) close to normal, ARCN stimulation elicited decreases in MAP and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). The decreases in MAP elicited by ARCN stimulation were attenuated by either gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), neuropeptide Y (NPY), or beta-endorphin receptor blockade in the ipsilateral hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN).

The presence of urocortin 3 (UCN3) and CRF2 receptors (CRF2R) has been demonstrated in brain tissue. Nucleus ambiguus (nAmb) is the predominant brain area providing parasympathetic innervation to the heart. On the basis of these reports, it was hypothesized that activation of CRF2Rs in the nAmb may elicit cardiac effects.

Sudden deafness and facial diplegia in Guillain-Barré Syndrome: radiological depiction of facial and acoustic nerve lesions.

We herein report a 26-year-old man with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) coexisting facial nerve palsy (FP) and deafness. He developed deafness, facial weakness, and limb weakness and numbness. Neurological examination showed facial diplegia, bilateral hypoacusia, areflexia and sensorimotor deficits in the distal limbs.

The efficiency of insertion and/or deletion (indels) polymorphisms as genetic markers was evaluated by genotyping 102 indels loci in native chicken populations from Myanmar and Indonesia as well as Red jungle fowls and Green jungle fowls from Java Island. Out of the 102 indel markers, 97 were polymorphic. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.

Rapid development of central pontine myelinolysis after recovery from Wernicke encephalopathy: a non-alcoholic case without hyponatremia.

We describe a non-alcoholic diabetic patient with central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) and Wernicke encephalopathy (WE). A 69-year-old man developed consciousness disturbance after parenteral hyperalimentation for liver abscess and sepsis. Neurological examination revealed drowsiness and no articulation.

Relationships between disease progression and serum levels of lipid, urate, creatinine and ferritin in Japanese patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: Previous studies have reported distinct serological profiles of lipid, urate and ferritin in Western patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We aimed to examine the levels of these serological factors and their relationship to disease progression in Japanese ALS patients.

Effect of polymorphism in egg white lysozyme on muramidase and antibacterial activities as well as hatchability in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Lysozyme is one of the best characterized antimicrobial proteins in egg white. Three phenotypes of egg white lysozyme in Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, (namely fast; slow; and the combination, FS) were observed by acid polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
