Natural mineral licks are ecologically valuable resources to meet the physiological needs of herbivores, particularly in temperate forests. Drowsiness monitoring can reduce workplace and driving accidents. To enable a discreet device for drowsiness monitoring and detection, this work presents a drowsiness user-study with an in-ear EEG system, which uses two user-generic, dry electrode earpieces and a wireless interface for streaming data. Twenty-one drowsiness trials were recorded across five human users and drowsiness detection was implemented with three classifier models: logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM), and random forest.

In the past few years it has been demonstrated that electroencephalography (EEG) can be recorded from inside the ear (in-ear EEG). To open the door to low-profile earpieces as wearable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), this work presents a practical in-ear EEG device based on multiple dry electrodes, a user-generic design, and a lightweight wireless interface for streaming data and device programming. The earpiece is designed for improved ear canal contact across a wide population of users and is fabricated in a low-cost and scalable manufacturing process based on standard techniques such as vacuum forming, plasma-treatment, and spray coating.

In this paper, we report the preparation of a new composite (TiO/SiO/γ-FeO/rGO) with a high photocatalytic efficiency. The properties of the composite were examined by different analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), photoluminescence (PL), UV-Visible light diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and nitrogen gas physisorption (BET) studies. The photocatalytic efficiency of the proposed composite was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under UV and visible light, and the results were compared with titanium dioxide (TiO), where degradation increased from 30% to 84% and 4% to 66% under UV and visible light, respectively.

A novel nanohybrid composite of TiO, SiO, γ-FeO, and reduced graphene oxide (TiO@Si:Fe:rGO) is fabricated by the sol-gel method. The properties of the coated film were examined by structural and self-cleaning analyses using simulated discoloration/soiling and roofing tests. The fabricated transparent TiO@Si:Fe:rGO composite showed excellent photoactivity and wettability, behaving well in self-cleaning applications.

The release of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the environment has raised concerns about their effects on living organisms, including plants. In this study, changes in gene expression in Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated AgNPs and silver ions (Ag(+)) were analyzed using Affymetrix expression microarrays. Exposure to 5 mg/L AgNPs (20 nm) for 10 days resulted in upregulation of 286 genes and downregulation of 81 genes by reference to nonexposed plants.

Three hydroxylated derivatives of PCBs, 2'-hydroxy-4-chlorobiphenyl (2'-OH-4-CB), 3'-hydroxy-4-chlorobiphenyl (3'-OH-4-CB), and 4'-hydroxy-4-chlorobiphenyl (4'-OH-4-CB), were transformed by the PCB degrader, Burkholderia xenovorans. When the bacterium was growing on biphenyl (biphenyl pathway-inducing conditions), all three hydroxylated isomers were transformed. However, only 2'-OH-4-CB was transformed by the bacterium growing on succinate (conditions non-inductive of the biphenyl pathway).

The role of calcium in stimulation of the oxyntic cell by histamine and carbamylcholine was studied using a sensitive quantitative cytochemical staining technique that measures oxyntic cell hydroxyl ion production (HIP) as an index of acid secretion. Histamine (10(-17)-10(-14) M), carbamylcholine (10(-12)-10(-9) M), and extracellular calcium (10(-7)-10(-3) M) caused a linear, dose-dependent stimulation of the oxyntic cell. EGTA (10(-6) M) inhibited carbamylcholine by 50% but not histamine-stimulated activity.
