Student nurses and the electronic medical record: a partnership of academia and healthcare.

The advent of the electronic medical record has brought a new challenge to nursing education. Although most nursing students are proficient in data entry and computer skills, they often do not comprehend how the information they enter becomes a vital component of interdisciplinary team communication. Furthermore, the electronic medical record becomes a repository for information that can be retrieved for the purpose of decision support.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for endometrial cancer.

Objective: To review the role of adjuvant chemotherapy in endometrial cancer and to identify the groups of patients who were most likely to have benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy.

Methods: Bibliographic search was conducted for randomized trials involving chemotherapy given in an adjuvant setting for early stage endometrial cancer or advanced stage with minimal residual disease after surgery. The search included the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE/PubMed database, studies cited in the reports, proceedings of international conferences, and registered clinical trials.

Techno-economic implications of improved high gravity corn mash fermentation.

Phase 1b-2a study to reverse platinum resistance through use of a hypomethylating agent, azacitidine, in patients with platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory epithelial ovarian cancer.

Background: Sequential treatment with azacitidine can induce re-expression of epigenetically silenced genes through genomic DNA hypomethylation and reverse carboplatin resistance of epithelial ovarian cancer cells. A phase 1b-2a clinical trial of this sequential combination of azacitidine and carboplatin was initiated in patients with platinum-resistant or platinum-refractory epithelial ovarian cancer.

Methods: Patients with pathologically confirmed intermediate-grade or high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer who developed disease progression within 6 months (resistant disease, n = 18 patients) or during a platinum-based therapy (refractory disease, n = 12 patients) were eligible.

Methods: We reviewed the electronic medical records of 74 patients with low-grade ESS who had been evaluated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between 1995 and 2006.

Background: Despite the complexity of movement, the swings of skilled golfers are considered to be highly consistent. Interestingly, no direct investigation of movement variability or coupling variability during the swings of skilled golfers has occurred.

Differences in rapid initiation and termination of voluntary postural sway associated with ageing and falls-risk.

The authors examined differences between young adults (n = 25) and healthy older adults (n = 48) in reaction time and the relations between center of pressure (COP) and center of mass (COM) motions during rapid initiation and termination of voluntary postural sway. Older adults were divided into low and high falls-risk groups based on Physiological Profile Assessment scores of sensorimotor function. Low falls-risk older adults had slower reaction times during anteroposterior sway initiation and decreased COP-COM separation during anteroposterior and medialateral sway initiation and anteroposterior continuous voluntary sway compared with young adults.

Influence of maternal health literacy on child participation in social welfare programs: the Philadelphia experience.

We examined the influence of maternal health literacy on child participation in social welfare programs. In this cohort, 20% of the mothers had inadequate or marginal health literacy. Initially, more than 50% of the families participated in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the Food Stamp Program, and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, whereas fewer than 15% received child care subsidies or public housing.

Design development of an electrocoagulation reactor for molasses process wastewater treatment.

The impact of electrode corrosion behaviour, reactor geometry and current density on electrocoagulation efficiency were investigated for the treatment of molasses process wastewater. Two laboratory-scale vertical plate electrocoagulation reactors were used for this investigation: the first being a low aspect ratio bath reactor with a low specific electrode area, while the other was a high aspect ratio column reactor with a high specific electrode area. Anomalous anodic dissolution and cathodic corrosion of the aluminium electrodes both contributed significantly to overall metal consumption.

Searching for systematic reviews of the effects of social and environmental interventions: a case study of children and obesity.

Setting: Although an important part of the evidence base in health, systematic reviews are not always easy to find. Difficulties are compounded when interventions under review are "social and environmental" (that is, targeting wider determinants of health). The authors explored searches from a descriptive map containing thirty-two systematic reviews evaluating the effectiveness of social and environmental interventions for childhood obesity.

Reverse engineering the kidney: modelling calcium oxalate monohydrate crystallization in the nephron.

Crystallization of calcium oxalate monohydrate in a section of a single kidney nephron (distal convoluted tubule) is simulated using a model adapted from industrial crystallization. The nephron fluid dynamics is represented as a crystallizer/separator series with changing volume to allow for water removal along the tubule. The model integrates crystallization kinetics and crystal size distribution and allows the prediction of the calcium oxalate concentration profile and the nucleation and growth rates.

Targeted therapies for rare gynaecological cancers.

Some gynaecological cancers are uncommon, such as sex cord-stromal tumours, malignant germ-cell tumours, vulvar carcinoma, melanoma of the female genital tract, clear-cell carcinoma of the ovary and endometrium, neuroendocrine tumours of the cervix, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. All these cancers have different clinicopathological characteristics, suggesting different molecular biological pathogeneses. Despite aggressive treatment, some cancers recur or respond poorly to therapy.

Background: Canfosfamide is a novel glutathione analog activated by glutathione S-transferase P1-1. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of canfosfamide in combination with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in patients with platinum resistant ovarian cancer. Patients with platinum resistant ovarian carcinoma and measurable disease received canfosfamide at 960 mg/m2 in combination with PLD at 50 mg/m2, intravenously day 1 in every 28 day cycles until tumor progression or unacceptable toxicities.

Thorax and pelvis kinematics during the downswing of male and female skilled golfers.

Thorax and pelvis motion during the golf swing have most frequently been described for male golfers at discrete points during the swing, such as top of backswing (TBS) and ball contact (BC). Less is known about the continual motion and coordination of the thorax and pelvis throughout the downswing for either male or female golfers. Background: Similar to patients with other chronic disorders, patients with serious mental illness (SMI) are often poorly adherent with prescribed medications.

Objective: We conducted a randomized controlled trial examining the effectiveness of a pharmacy-based intervention (Meds-Help) in increasing antipsychotic medication adherence among Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients with SMI. We also examined the impact of Meds-Help on psychiatric symptoms, quality of life, and satisfaction with care.

What is the benefit of bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy in patients with recurrent ovarian, fallopian tube or primary peritoneal malignancies?

The aim of this retrospective analysis was to investigate the efficacy and adverse effects of the monoclonal antivascular endothelial growth factor antibody bevacizumab (Avastin(R)) combined with chemotherapeutic agents in non-protocol patients with recurrent ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal malignancies. Using our databases, we identified patients treated with bevacizumab combination therapy since June 2005. Endometrial cancer is one of the gynaecological cancers that carries good overall prognosis because it is often detected at early stages of disease. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics replaced clinical staging with surgical staging in 1988 and updated the system in 2009. Controversies remain regarding the recommended screening protocol for women with a high risk of endometrial cancer, the role and benefit of retroperitoneal lymph-node dissection, the necessity of ovarian resection, the benefit and type of adjuvant radiation therapy, and the safety of hormone-replacement therapy after treatment.

Background: Prostaglandins have been used for induction of labour since the 1960s. Initial work focused on prostaglandin F2a as prostaglandin E2 was considered unsuitable for a number of reasons. With the development of alternative routes of administration, comparisons were made between various formulations of vaginal prostaglandins.

Objective: Women with ovarian cancer face a poor prognosis, with prolonged periods of treatment but relatively high levels of physical functioning. Their thoughts and feelings regarding the prospect of dying are complex and have not been adequately studied. We also examined cyclin G1 and p53 expression in 7 epithelial ovarian cancer cell lines using Western blot analysis.
