Article Synopsis
  • Regorafenib is a medication for metastatic colorectal carcinoma (mCRC) that often has low efficacy and can cause adverse effects; researchers explored the impact of statin use in patients undergoing treatment.
  • In a retrospective study of 105 mCRC patients treated with regorafenib, those on statins were found to have shorter progression-free survival (1.9 vs. 4.2 months) and overall survival (4.7 vs. 6.7 months) compared to non-users.
  • The findings suggest that statin use may be linked to worse survival outcomes in mCRC patients receiving regorafenib, but further research is necessary to validate these observations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the effects of Dropped Head Syndrome (DHS) on functional status and body image in Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients while also examining the link between head and neck lymphedema (HNL) and DHS, a first in existing literature.
  • A total of 47 HNC patients aged 18 to 75 were assessed, using specific staging and quality of life scales to evaluate the impact of DHS and lymphedema on body image and function.
  • Results indicated significant correlations between body image scores and various factors such as age, surgical history, and lymphedema stages, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and proactive management to enhance quality of life for affected

Giant barocaloric effects were recently reported for spin-crossover materials. The volume change in these materials suggests that the transition can be influenced by uniaxial stress, and give rise to giant elastocaloric properties. However, no measurements of the elastocaloric properties in these compounds have been reported so far.

Regorafenib, an oral multikinase inhibitor, has improved survival in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients who have progressed on standard therapies. Our study aimed to evaluate prognostic factors influencing regorafenib treatment and assess the optimal dosing regimen in a real-life setting. We retrospectively analysed 263 patients with mCRC from multiple medical oncology clinics in Turkey.

Natural products with semi-synthetic molecules displays higher biological activities, and creates new biological properties for the treatment of diseases. Although, natural products like artemisinin have been used as a traditional medicine over thousands of years, structure and biological properties of many natural products were investigated in the 20th century. Design and synthesis of new biologically active compounds including natural products have very critical roles to find novel drug candidates.

Natural products are used for the treatment of a variety of diseases for many years. Last decades, design and synthesis of novel biologically active hybrid molecules including natural product is gained big importance due to their unique and new biological properties. In the present study, novel artemisinin-benzothiophene derivatives () are synthesised.

Objectives: We aimed to compare gender difference on sizes of some structures in the brain of normal male and female fetuses between 20 and 22 week gestations.

Methods: A total of 300 female and 300 male singleton pregnancies with low risk were included in the study. Biparietal diameter, head circumference, transcerebellar diameter, cisterna magna, nuchal fold thickness, anterior and posterior horn of lateral ventricles, length and width of cavum septum pellucidum were measured transabdominally.

A molecular hybridization of natural products is a new concept in drug discovery and having critical roles to design new molecules with improved biological properties. Hybrid molecules display higher biological activities when compared to the parent drugs. In the present study, two natural products (thymol and artemisinin ()) are used for the synthesis of new hybrid thymol-artemisinin.

The last decade has proven that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, and that the genetic component in sporadic cases might be stronger than expected. This study investigates 1,200 patients to revisit ALS in the ethnically heterogeneous yet inbred Turkish population. Familial ALS (fALS) accounts for 20% of our cases.

Objectives: Measurement of the nasal bone is an important part of the genetic sonogram. This study aimed to compare nasal bone length measurements taken in 2 different planes and to determine whether there is consistency between the measurements.

Methods: The nasal bone was measured in 103 fetuses whose mothers were admitted to our clinic for second-trimester ultrasound examinations and who did not have any accompanying diseases.

The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative results of the patients who were treated with Bakri balloon tamponade or hysterectomy for placenta accreta and increta. Patients who were diagnosed with placenta accreta or increta preoperatively and intraoperatively and treated with Bakri balloon tamponade (Group 1) or caesarean hysterectomy (Group 2) were compared in regards to the postoperative results. Among the 36 patients diagnosed with placenta accreta or increta, 19 patients were treated with Bakri balloon tamponade while 17 cases were treated with hysterectomy.

Altered expression of specific microRNAs (miRNAs) has been observed in human cervical cancer. However, the biological functions of many of these miRNAs are yet to be discovered. We previously showed that miR-944 is significantly more abundant in cervical cancer tissues than their normal counterparts.

RNA-Seq is arising as a powerful method for transcriptome analyses that will eventually make microarrays obsolete for gene expression analyses. Improvements in high-throughput sequencing and efficient sample barcoding are now enabling tens of samples to be run in a cost-effective manner, competing with microarrays in price, excelling in performance. Still, most studies use microarrays, partly due to the ease of data analyses using programs and modules that quickly turn raw microarray data into spreadsheets of gene expression values and significant differentially expressed genes.

Alternative splicing of pre-messenger RNA is a key feature of transcriptome expansion in eukaryotic cells, yet its regulation is poorly understood. Spliceosome assembly occurs co-transcriptionally, raising the possibility that DNA structure may directly influence alternative splicing. Supporting such an association, recent reports have identified distinct histone methylation patterns, elevated nucleosome occupancy and enriched DNA methylation at exons relative to introns.

Cancer is among the major causes of human death and its mechanism(s) are not fully understood. We applied a novel meta-analysis approach to multiple sets of merged serial analysis of gene expression and microarray cancer data in order to analyze transcriptome alterations in human cancer. Our methodology, which we denote 'COgnate Gene Expression patterNing in tumours' (COGENT), unmasked numerous genes that were differentially expressed in multiple cancers.
