But there is little researech on the kind of urban neighbourhoods in which such associations typically show up. This study aims to shed light on the associations between neighbourhood characteristics, parental PSU and children's OHC.

Astrocytes express ionotropic receptors, including N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs). However, the contribution of NMDARs to astrocyte-neuron interactions, particularly in vivo, has not been elucidated. Here we show that a knockdown approach to selectively reduce NMDARs in mouse cortical astrocytes decreases astrocyte Ca transients evoked by sensory stimulation.

Neighbourhood effects on psychiatric disorders among Finnish adolescents: The moderating impact of family background.

We study whether childhood neighbourhood context affects mental health in adolescence in Finland. We also examine heterogeneous effects by family background. By exploiting register data for 1999-2018, we use sibling fixed effects models to gain more robust evidence on the existence of neighbourhood effects.

Animal welfare labeling schemes have been developed to respond to consumers' expectations regarding farm animal welfare. They are designed to certify that labeled products comply with certain animal welfare standards. In this study, 12 pig welfare labeling schemes were reviewed, and their criteria related to pig welfare were compared.

PARP-DNA trapping ability of PARP inhibitors jeopardizes astrocyte viability: Implications for CNS disease therapeutics.

There is emerging interest in the role of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) in neurodegeneration and potential of its therapeutic targeting in neurodegenerative disorders. New generations of PARP inhibitors exhibit polypharmacological properties; they do not only block enzymatic activity with lower doses, but also alter how PARP-1 interacts with DNA. While these new inhibitors have proven useful in cancer therapy due to their ability to kill cancer cell, their use in neurodegenerative disorders has an opposite goal: cell protection.

However, other demographic processes, such as natural change and international migration, also matter. This paper contributes to the literature by unravelling the impacts of different demographic processes to changes in ethnic segregation.

Cardiolipin (CL) is a key mitochondrial phospholipid essential for mitochondrial energy production. CL is remodeled from monolysocardiolipin (MLCL) by the enzyme tafazzin (TAZ). Loss-of-function mutations in the gene which encodes TAZ results in a rare X-linked disorder called Barth Syndrome (BTHS).

Tc-Sestamibi/I Subtraction SPECT/CT in Parathyroid Scintigraphy: Is Additional Pinhole Imaging Useful?

Objectives: This retrospective study evaluated whether the use of additional anterior Tc-sestamibi/I pinhole imaging improves the outcome of Tc-sestamibi/I subtraction SPECT/CT in parathyroid scintigraphy (PS).

Materials And Methods: PS using simultaneous dual-isotope subtraction methods and an acquisition protocol combining SPECT/CT and planar pinhole imaging was performed for 175 patients with primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. All patients who proceeded to surgery with complete postsurgery laboratory findings were included in this study ( = 94).

Workplace Measurements of Ultrafine Particles-A Literature Review.

Workers are exposed to ultrafine particles (UFP) in a number of occupations. In order to summarize the current knowledge regarding occupational exposure to UFP (excluding engineered nanoparticles), we gathered information on UFP concentrations from published research articles. The aim of our study was to create a basis for future epidemiological studies that treat UFP as an exposure factor.

Alzheimer's disease pathology includes, beside neuronal damage, reactive gliosis and reduced blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity. Microglia are intimately associated with the BBB and upon AD pathology, pro-inflammatory responses of microglia could contribute to BBB damage. To study whether microglia can directly affect BBB integrity, the effects of amyloid beta (Aβ) -stimulated primary murine microglia on co-cultured mouse brain endothelial cells (bEnd3) and murine astrocyte cultures were assessed.

Background: Birth cohort studies link gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with impaired cognitive performance in the offspring. However, the mechanisms involved are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that obesity-associated GDM induces chronic neuroinflammation and disturbs the development of neuronal circuitry resulting in impaired cognitive abilities in the offspring.

Placental and fetal hemodynamics in prolonged pregnancies.

Objective: We hypothesized that Doppler measurements of the placental and fetal central and peripheral hemodynamics would predict adverse outcomes in prolonged uncomplicated singleton pregnancies.

Method: A total of 160 participants were recruited to this study. Doppler measurements of placental and fetal hemodynamics as well as cardiotocography (CTG) were assessed prior to induction of labor at >41+ weeks.

Genetic Variation in δ-Opioid Receptor Associates with Increased β- and γ-Secretase Activity in the Late Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

The agonist-induced activation of human δ-opioid receptor (δOR) has been shown to increase β- (BACE1) and γ-secretase activities leading to increased production of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide. We have recently shown that phenylalanine to cysteine substitution at amino acid 27 in δOR (δOR-Phe27Cys) increases amyloid-β protein precursor processing through altered endocytic trafficking. Also, a genetic meta-analysis of the δOR-Phe27Cys variation (rs1042114) in two independent Alzheimer's disease (AD) patient cohorts indicated that the heterozygosity of δOR-Phe27Cys increases the risk of AD.

Testicular germ cell tumours and parental occupational exposure to pesticides: a register-based case-control study in the Nordic countries (NORD-TEST study).

Objectives: A potential impact of exposure to endocrine disruptors, including pesticides, during intrauterine life, has been hypothesised in testicular germ cell tumour (TGCT) aetiology, but exposure assessment is challenging. This large-scale registry-based case-control study aimed to investigate the association between parental occupational exposure to pesticides and TGCT risk in their sons.

Methods: Cases born in 1960 or onwards, aged between 14 and 49 years, and diagnosed between 1978 and 2013 in Denmark, Finland, Norway or Sweden, were identified from the respective nationwide cancer registries.

Background: To evaluate the role of NADPH oxidase-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in multiple sclerosis pathogenesis, we examined the effects of apocynin, an NADPH oxidase assembly inhibitor, on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).

Methods: EAE was induced by immunization with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG (35-55)) in C57BL/6 female mice. Three weeks after initial immunization, the mice were analyzed for demyelination, immune cell infiltration, and ROS production.

The precise role of TREM2 during ischemic stroke has not been fully understood.
