Four cynomolgus monkeys were treated topically twice daily in one eye with echothiophate iodide (PI) doses of 63, 75, or 250 micrograms per treatment for 7.7 weeks to 7 months. The opposite eyes of two monkeys received a control solution (diluent).

Twenty-two cynomolgus monkeys underwent unilateral total iridectomy in vivo. Several weeks to several months postoperatively, intraocular pressure (IOP) was determined bilaterally by manometry under pentobarbital anesthesia (15 monkeys), by a minified Goldmann applanation tonometer under CI-744 anesthesia (16 monkeys), and by a minified Draeger applanation tonometer under light phencyclidine catalepsia (4 monkeys). Mean IOP in aniridic eyes was about 0.

Ten to 12 weeks after unilateral disinsertion, resting refraction in the "disinserted" eyes was more hyperopic than in the opposite eyes by 1.12 +/- 0.

Treatment with the auxin transport inhibitors, methyl-2-chloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-(9)-carboxylate (CFM) or 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), alone promotes elongation growth of the stem segments over that of control growth. This effect is interpreted as being due to the interference in the transport of native indoleacetic acid by CFM and TIBA, thus removing the inhibitory effect of native indoleacetic acid on gibberellin-promoted growth in the internodal intercalary meristem.

Post-hemorrhagic visual loss occurs in middle-aged, debilitated persons a short time after repeated episodes of hemorrhage from any site.

A 67-year-old woman and a 75-year-old woman taking carbonic anhydrase inhibitors for therapy of glaucoma and high doses of aspirin for therapy of arthritis developed severe acid-base imbalance and salicylate intoxication. Neither patient exhibited ill effects when taking high aspirin doses without carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Carbonic anhydrose inhibitor-induced acidemia increases the risk of developing salicylate intoxication in patients receiving high aspirin doses.

I treated cynomolgus monkeys with topical echothiophate iodide twice daily for several months. Accommodative responses to topical or intramuscular pilocarpine were determined after ciliary ganglion or cholinergic nerve blockade. During echothiophate treatment, there was little or no accommodative response to intramuscular pilocarpine doses which were near maximal in nonechothiophate-treated eyes.

Sterility was significantly lower and the average number of live progeny per fertile mating was significantly higher in populations where stabilizing selection was practiced as compared with random selected populations. The results indicate that more genetic variability is being maintained than would be expected unless a fraction of the genes have a heterozygote advantage on the fitness scale.

Aqueous humor formation (AHF), uveoscleral flow (U), gross outflow facility (Cg), true facility of outflow from the anterior chamber (Ct1), true facility of outflow from anterior chamber into the general circulation (Ct2), and the pressure sensitivity of AHF (pseudofacility; Cps) were determined in cynomologus monkey eyes which had undergone total iris removal or iris removal followed by ciliary muscle disinsertion. AHF was in the normal range in iridectomized-only eyes. AHF was present but reduced in "disinserted" eyes.

Sixteen eyes of 13 cynomolgus monkeys were treated topically twice daily with echothiophate iodide. The dosages were increased gradually over several weeks to plateau levels ranging from 125 to 500 mug daily. The opposite eyes of the ten unilaterally treated monkeys received a control solution (DILUENT) identical save for the absence of echothiophate.
