Understanding the sociocultural roots of childhood obesity: food practices among Latino families of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Despite prevention efforts, childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. This ethnographic study seeks to enhance understandings of the sociocultural dimensions of childhood obesity and inform prevention efforts. Using participant observation, interviews, and life histories, this research probes the sociocultural roots of childhood obesity by exploring the food practices and everyday lives of Latino families in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a low-income neighborhood in New York City.

Implementation of a strength training program for a 5-year-old child with poor body awareness and developmental coordination disorder.

Background And Purpose: This case report describes how a strength (muscle force-generating capacity) training program was associated with changes in muscle strength, motor function, and proprioceptive position sense in a young child with poor body awareness and a diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder.

Case Description: Assessment of a prekindergarten child referred for physical therapy because of behaviors compatible with poor body awareness revealed muscle weakness, poor performance on the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, and poor proprioception. Physical therapy testing done when the child was 5 years of age contributed to a pediatrician-assigned diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder.

Probe particles alter dynamic heterogeneities in simple supercooled systems.

The authors present results from molecular dynamics simulations on the effect of smooth and rough probes on the dynamics of a supercooled Lennard-Jones (LJ) mixture. The probe diameter was systematically varied from one to seven times the diameter of the large particles of the LJ mixture. Mean square displacements show that in the presence of a large smooth probe the supercooled liquid speeds up, while in the presence of a large rough probe, the supercooled liquid slows down.

Introduction: Specimen mammography during image guided breast surgery is a daily occurrence. The process of specimen travel, imaging and reporting may take 20-30 minutes. An intraoperative method to obtain digital specimen mammograms may expedite the process.

Evaluation of combined general primer-mediated PCR sequencing and type-specific PCR strategies for determination of human papillomavirus genotypes in cervical cell specimens.

A strategy combining human papillomavirus general primer (mainly the PGMY primers)-directed PCR sequencing and type-specific PCR is presented. DNA samples were first tested in general primer-mediated PCR. The amplified fragments of positive samples after ethidium bromide-stained DNA gel analysis were further sequenced, and corresponding DNA samples were further analyzed by PCR using type-specific primers for human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16, 18, 31, and 52.

Perceptual distance and the constancy of size and stereoscopic depth.

The relationship between distance and size perception is unclear because of conflicting results of tests investigating the size-distance invariance hypothesis (SDIH), according to which perceived size is proportional to perceived distance. We propose that response bias with regard to measures of perceived distance is at the root of the conflict. Rather than employ the usual method of magnitude estimation, the bias-free two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) method was used to determine the precision (1/sigma) of discriminating depth at different distances.

Flow and magnetic field induced collagen alignment.

A straightforward technique to align thin collagen gels is presented. This technique requires only collagen solution, surface-modified magnetic beads, a small magnet, and an incubator. As such, this is the only collagen alignment technique that requires no specialized equipment.

Combined strabismus and lens surgery.

Background: Simultaneous eye muscle and lens surgery in patients with strabismus and lens abnormalities offers the advantage of avoiding staged surgery.

Methods: Thirty-three combined strabismus and lens surgeries were performed on 30 patients who ranged in age from 22 months to 91 years. Fifteen of the strabismus procedures were performed for esotropia, 12 for exotropia, 4 for vertical deviations, and 2 for combined vertical-horizontal deviations.

Background: Neisserial surface protein A (NspA) is a highly conserved, surface-exposed outer membrane protein of Neisseria meningitidis that has been shown to induce a bactericidal immune response in animals against all pathogenic Neisserial serogroups.

Methods: Healthy 18-50-year-old adults were assigned to receive, in a dose escalating manner, 3 doses of 1 of 5 formulations of an experimental, unfolded, recombinant NspA (rNspA) vaccine or placebo, or 1 dose of commercially available quadravalent (A, C, Y, W-135) meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Menomune((R))). Adverse events were collected during the first week post-immunization, prior to the next dose and 1 month after the last dose.

Optic glioma warranting treatment in children.

Purpose: To describe cases of optic pathway glioma (OPG) warranting treatment in children.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of pediatric patients treated for OPG. The clinical data and imaging studies were obtained from the medical records and radiology files of patients seen at the Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic at the University of Illinois, Chicago and the private office of the author (LMK).

Intraoperative digital specimen mammography: prompt image review speeds surgery.

Specimen mammograms are often a time-consuming event for image-guided surgery. The use of an intraoperative imaging device may improve the speed of surgery, but comparison must be made to ensure accuracy is maintained. One hundred fifty consecutive image localized patients underwent both intraoperative digital specimen mammogram (in the operating room) and standard specimen mammogram (in radiology).

Digital documentation of the physical examination: moving the clinical breast exam to the electronic medical record.

Background: Documentation of the clinical breast examination (CBE) has consisted of simple hand-drawings and stick figures without a common lexicon. There is a need for a device that can accurately depict the CBE in digital format while being objective, reproducible over time, and useable in the electronic medical record. This new device is called palpation imaging (PI).

Direct imaging of repulsive and attractive colloidal glasses.

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy is performed on glassy systems of poly(methylmethacrylate) colloidal particles in density- and refractive-index-matched solvents. Samples are prepared with varying amounts of linear polystyrene, which induces a depletion driven attraction between the nearly hard-sphere particles. Images collected over several hours confirm the existence of a reentrant glass transition.

HIV-1 infection initiates an inflammatory cascade in human renal tubular epithelial cells.

HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) is the most common cause of chronic renal failure in HIV-infected patients. Tubulointerstitial inflammation is a prominent component of the histopathology of HIVAN. The pathogenesis of HIVAN is a result of infection of renal epithelial cells, but the cellular response to this infection remains poorly defined.

Role of ubiquitin-like protein FAT10 in epithelial apoptosis in renal disease.

Dysregulated apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTEC) is an important component of the pathogenesis of several renal diseases, including HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN), the most common cause of chronic kidney failure in HIV-infected patients. In HIVAN, RTEC become infected by HIV-1 in a focal distribution, and HIV-1 infection has been shown to induce apoptosis in vitro. In microarray studies that used a novel renal tubular epithelial cell line from a patient with HIVAN, it was found that the ubiquitin-like protein FAT10 is one of the most upregulated genes in HIV-infected cells.
