The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of variables in osteosarcoma. We performed a retrospective analysis of 35 patients with non-metastatic limb osteosarcoma that were treated between 1973 and 1994. The following variables were evaluated: age, sex, ethnic group, tumor histology and primary site, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels at diagnosis, treatment regimen, and the histologic response to treatment.

This paper analyses the issue of adolescents' access to family planning services and information on reproductive health. The data used in this paper are a part of a broader study conducted in 1995 in Dakar (Senegal) by the Committee for Studies on Women, Family and Environment in Africa (COSWFEVA/CEFFEVA) and Family Health International. The findings present information on adolescents' perceptions of premarital sexual activity and contraceptive use and the different types of barriers to access to family planning, using data obtained primarily from focus group discussions with adolescents 16 to 20 years old and a mystery client study.

A theoretical base that spans both clinical outcomes and professional boundaries is needed. The web of causation is a theoretical framework that provides a platform of communication connecting issues related to infant mortality among various health-related professions.

Experimentally, the murine B cell lymphoma (BCL1) is used as a model of tumor dormancy in mice vaccinated with the BCL1 Ig. Here, we used this model to explore the cellular mechanisms underlying dormancy.

The deformity was corrected in 6-8 weeks in all cases. At the 2- to 6-year follow-up (mean, 4 years), the correction was maintained in all children who had had a moderate deformity; of the 44 feet with severe deformity that were available for examination, six now had a moderate deformity, and one a severe deformity.

From 1995 through 1997, clubfoot was detected by transabdominal sonography in 13 fetuses of 12 women, in nine bilaterally and in four unilaterally (total, 22 clubfeet). The average menstrual age at diagnosis was 23.6 weeks (range, 17-36).

Dual force sensing resistor transducers, connected to optically-isolated amplifiers, were used to monitor the forces. A thermistor airflow sensor was used for the parallel monitoring of the respiratory signal.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFT cell antigen receptor (TCR) and pre-TCR complexes are composed of clonotypic heterodimers in association with dimers of signal transducing invariant subunits (CD3gamma, -delta, -epsilon, and zeta). The role of individual invariant subunits in T cell development has been investigated by generating gene-specific mutations in mice. Mutation of CD3gamma, -delta, or zeta results in an incomplete block in development, characterized by reduced numbers of mature T cells that express low levels of TCR.

In the present study we report the full-length sequencing of PB39 cDNA, genomic localization of the PB39 gene, and genomic sequence of the mouse homologue. The full-length human cDNA is 2317 nucleotides in length and contains an open reading frame of 559 amino acids which does not show homology with any reported human genes.

Patients presenting as children have an excess of compound heterozygotes of N370S and other mutations, such as 84GG, 1448C (L444P) and IVS2 + 1 in whom bone disease is common. We report our experience with low-dose high-frequency enzyme replacement therapy in such severely affected children.

Objectives: To determine if cerebral palsy (CP) rates were lower in the active treatment group compared with the control group, as improved survival rates of very low-birth-weight infants are postulated to be the cause of the increased incidence of CP in preterm infants, to evaluate relationships between multiple prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal variables and CP to understand better its antecedents in very low-birth-weight infants in the era of surfactant replacement therapy, and to determine the usefulness of a cranial ultrasonographic (US) scan in predicting CP.
Design: Inception cohort follow-up study as part of a randomized controlled trial of low-dose indomethacin sodium for the prevention of intraventricular hemorrhage.
Setting: Neonatal intensive care units at 3 medical centers.
Background: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of pancreatic lesions is being increasingly used. Our aim was to determine the safety, accuracy, and clinical utility of EUS-guided FNA in both the diagnosis and staging of pancreatic cancer.
Methods: Forty-four patients (24 men/20 women) had EUS-guided FNA of pancreatic lesions (39 head/neck, 5 body, 3 tail) and/or associated lymph nodes.
Objective: Although lipid abnormalities are well described in hypothyroidism, effects on apolipoproteins are less well understood. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of thyroid dysfunction on plasma lipids and apolipoproteins.
Design: A prospective study of lipids and apolipoproteins before and after treatment of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
This paper reports on a prospective study conducted between June 1990 and June 1992 to determine method acceptability, user satisfaction and continuation rates for three highly effective and reversible contraceptive methods currently available in Kenya: the CuT 380A (IUCD), the injectable, Depo-Provera and the low-dose oral contraceptive pill, Microgynon. A non-randomised sample of volunteer participants was used. One thousand and seventy-six users were followed up for a period of one year or up to the time of discontinuation of the method, whichever came earlier.

Premature children were classified by neonatal cerebral lesions into no lesion, mild lesion, and severe lesion groups. It was predicted that severity of lesion would be associated with CPT performance.

We hypothesized that the early administration of low-dose indomethacin would not be associated with adverse cognitive outcome at 36 months' corrected age (CA).
Methods: We enrolled 431 neonates of 600 to 1250 g birth weight with no IVH at 6 to 12 hours in a randomized, prospective trial to determine whether low-dose indomethacin would prevent IVH.
In type I Gaucher's disease, episodes of severe disabling bone pain, the so called bone crises, may be resistant to all analgesics, including narcotics. The demonstration of subperiosteal oedema on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) led to an attempt to use steroids to relieve the oedema and thereby the pain. On eight occasions, five patients with documented bone crises received conventional dose steroids (20 mg/m2/day) with considerable shortening of the attacks.

Postpartum IUD insertion programs are new to Africa and few have been carefully evaluated. Also, data on the clinical outcomes of postpartum IUD insertions using the Copper T 380A IUD are sparse. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate introductory postpartum IUD programs using the Copper T 380A IUD in Kenya and Mali.

We reviewed the cases of eight patients (thirteen hips) with Gaucher disease who had had osteonecrosis of the femoral head and had been managed with bed rest and non-weight-bearing with crutches only in the symptomatic stage of the bone crisis. The mean age of the patients at the onset of the first crisis in each hip was ten years (range, six to fourteen years). The mean age at the most recent follow-up examination for the six living patients (ten hips) was twenty-three years (range, nineteen to thirty-three years).
