The prevalence of gallstones is 20 % making it one of the most common causes for admissions to surgical wards. It seems that admissions and operations for gallstone disease are increasing. Gallstones are formed in the gallbladder but can also form in the biliary tree and most are made of cholesterol which is absorbed from the diet.

The recom-mended therapy is cholecystectomy but occasionally that is not possible and a conservative treatment with intravenous antibiotics is used. Should the patient not respond to conservative treatment a percutaneous catheter can be placed in the gallbladder (cholecystostomy).
