Article Synopsis
  • Rising obesity rates highlight the need to manage body fat, and targeting fatty acid uptake in enterocytes could be key for weight management.
  • Research shows that certain compounds, including capsaicin and its derivatives, can effectively reduce fatty acid uptake in intestinal cells (Caco-2 cells).
  • A study synthesized 23 new compounds and found that a specific ester, 1-methylpentyl-2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl)acetate, decreased fatty acid uptake significantly, suggesting that certain structural features of these compounds could help design dietary inhibitors for fat absorption.

Flavanoids and related polyphenols, among them hesperitin, have been shown to modulate cellular glucose transport by targeting SGLT-1 and GLUT-2 transport proteins. We aimed to investigate whether homoeriodictyol, which is structurally related to hesperitin, affects glucose uptake in differentiated Caco-2 cells as a model for the intestinal barrier. The results revealed that, in contrast to other polyphenols, the flavanon homoeriodictyol promotes glucose uptake by 29.

Mechanistically, nonhost resistance of Arabidopsis thaliana against the oomycete Phytophthora infestans is not well understood. Besides PEN2 and PEN3, which contribute to penetration resistance, no further components have been identified so far. In an ethylmethane sulphonate-mutant screen, we mutagenized pen2-1 and screened for mutants with an altered response to infection by P.
