The present study evaluates the effect of several pharmaceutical plasticizers on the thermo-physical and physicochemical properties of partially hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) used in fusion-based pharmaceutical formulation processes. Specifically, the effect of mannitol (MAN), sorbitol (SOR), sucrose (SUC), anhydrous citric acid (CA), triethyl citrate (TEC) and low-molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG400) on PVA's melting properties, physical state and thermal degradation was evaluated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffractometry (pXRD) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Results showed that the use of MAN, SOR, SUC and PEG400 led to the reduction of PVA's melting onset temperature, while MAN, SUC, CA and SOR were amorphously dispersed within PVA's matrix, and the addition of SUC and CA resulted in significant reduction of PVA's crystallinity.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently considered a modern global epidemic, and diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most common cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Anemia is one of the most significant complications of CKD, and it is mainly attributed to insufficient erythropoietin (EPO) production. Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is associated with metabolic complications including metabolic acidosis (MA), one of the main disorders of acid-base balance. The main causes involved in the appearance of MA during TPN administration are the metabolism of cationic amino acids and amino acids containing sulfuric acid (exogenous addition), the titratable acidity of the infused parenteral solution, the addition of acidificant agents (hydrochloric acid, acetic acid), thiamine deficiency, disruption of carbohydrate and lipid metabolic pathways and D-fructose administration. Moreover, hypophosphatemia that appears during TPN therapy contributes significantly to the maintenance of MA.
