A new anaerobic, thermophilic, CO-utilizing marine bacterium, strain JMT, was isolated from a submarine hot vent in Okinawa Trough. Cells of strain JMT were non-motile thin straight rods, sometimes branching, with a cell wall of the Gram-positive type, surrounded with an S-layer. Chains of three to five cells were often observed.

Using fMRI at a static magnetic field strength of 1.5T, we investigated how comprehension and humor of sentences would correlate to activation of the language areas in listening comprehension of a native language. Sentences with a high comprehension score augmented activation in the left inferior parietal lobule and posterior part of the left superior temporal gyrus, which may be related to semantic processing.

Dissociation between copying letters and writing to dictation has been reported in the clinical neuropsychological literature. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted in normal volunteers to detect the neurofunctional differences between 'copying Kanji', the Japanese ideographic characters, and 'writing Kanji corresponding to phonological information'. Four tasks were conducted: the copying-Kanji task, the writing-Kanji-corresponding-to-phonogram task, the Kanji-grapheme-puzzle task, and the control task.

Suppressive effect of excess dietary histidine on the expression of hepatic metallothionein-1 in rats.

The gene expression of liver metallothionein-1 in excess dietary histidine was investigated by feeding rats ad libitum on either a basal or histidine-excess (50 g of L-histidine per kg of diet) diet for 5 d. The copper content of the liver and zinc level in the serum of the rats fed on the histidine-excess diet were lower by 21% and 61%, respectively of the figures for the rats fed on the basal diet, but the zinc content of the liver and copper level in the serum were not affected. Excess dietary histidine caused an increase in the urinary output of both copper and zinc.

The effects of allopurinol on immune function in normal BALB/c and SCID mice.

To clarify the relationship between purine metabolism and immunity, the in vivo immunosuppressive effects of allopurinol (AL), a xanthinoxidase (XO) inhibitor, were studied using normal BALB/c and severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice. Following AL administration for 14 weeks (long term), a decreased immune response to ovalbumin (OVA) in the peripheral blood was observed in normal mice, which might not be only due to direct B cell suppression but also due to suppression of helper T cell function. In the SCID mice, there was a markedly late and reduced recovery of surface immunoglobulin (sIg) positive cells, which are markers for mature B lymphocytes, in the peripheral blood after AL administration.

The effects of micronutrients on growth of Thermococcus guaymasensis and Thenrmococcus aggregans in a starch-containing medium were investigated. A trace minerals solution, a vitamins solution and calcium chloride were omitted from the medium or added in different amounts. The growth rates of both species were not affected over a significant range of concentrations of these compounds, but appreciable inhibition of growth was observed after the addition of elemental sulfur to the medium.

[Clinical evaluation of acute and chronic pulmonary thromboembolism using intravascular ultrasound and angioscopy].

Pulmonary artery thrombi and parietal lesions were observed in 13 patients (mean age 58 +/- 18 years) with acute pulmonary thromboembolism (n = 4) and chronic pulmonary thromboembolism (n = 9) using intravascular ultrasound and angioscopy at the time of right heart catheterization. Patients with acute pulmonary thromboembolism without underlying disease mainly had non-echogenic intraluminal mass, and good pulsatile vessel without intimal thickening. Angioscopy directly showed red thrombi with white fibrin coating, and no parietal lesions.

A new marrow T cell depletion method using anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody-conjugated magnetic beads and its clinical application for prevention of acute graft-vs.-host disease in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation: results of a phase I-II trial.

We established a simple method of T cell depletion using anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody-conjugated immunomagnetic beads. Preliminary experiments using this method demonstrated that CD3+ T cells could be partially depleted without depleting CD56+ NK cells. A phase I-II clinical study was performed to assess the safety and efficacy of this partial T cell depletion method for the prevention of acute graft-vs.

Pressure-regulated metabolism in microorganisms.

There has been a renewal of interest in the survival strategies employed by deep-sea, high-pressure-adapted (piezophilic) microorganisms as well as in the effects of high pressure on mesophilic, 1-atmosphere-pressure-adapted microorganisms. This is partly the result of a greater appreciation of the adaptations of microorganisms to life in extreme environments and partly the result of the development of new techniques for examining physiological and molecular processes as a function of pressure.
