Objective: To determine which parameters, including femur morphology, proximal femur bone mineral density, or patient characteristics, are associated with bisphosphonate-related atypical femur fractures (AFFs) and to investigate the relationships between AFF location and these parameters.

Materials And Methods: Sixteen females with a history of bisphosphonate use who presented with AFFs and 38 females without AFFs, even those with long-term bisphosphonate use of > 5 years, were compared. FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3-internal tandem duplication (FLT3-ITD)-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has a poor prognosis, particularly with DNMT3A and NPM1 mutations. Quizartinib, a FLT3 inhibitor showing clinical benefit in FLT3-ITD-positive AML, has unclear safety and efficacy when combined with donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). We report a case of FLT3-ITD-positive AML with DNMT3A and NPM1 mutations that relapsed after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) and was treated with quizartinib and DLI.

Within the penile microbiome, bacteria associated with seroconversion, immunology, and cells (BASIC species) enhance HIV susceptibility in heterosexual uncircumcised men by inducing foreskin inflammation and HIV target cell recruitment. This phase 1/2 clinical trial randomizes HIV-uninfected Ugandan men (n = 125) to either oral tinidazole, topical metronidazole, topical clindamycin, or topical hydrogen peroxide to define impact on ex vivo foreskin HIV susceptibility, penile immunology, and BASIC species density. Antimicrobials are well tolerated, and 116 (93%) participants complete the protocol.

Objective: Transvaginal mesh surgery for pelvic organ prolapse has been widely performed in Japan, but polypropylene mesh has not been used in Japan since the ban on TVM using polypropylene mesh in the United States. Currently, polytetrafluoroethylene mesh ORIHIME® is the only mesh available for TVM in Japan. Although polytetrafluoroethylene is a safe material, its low coefficient of friction and insufficient adhesion to the surrounding tissue make it difficult to maintain the mesh position when it is used in the transvaginal mesh surgery.

Objective: Fourth-generation HIV Ag/Ab Combo assay is used for HIV screening of blood for transfusion in developing countries, however, the sensitivity of the assay is questionable during the acute phase of HIV infection. Thus, the study aimed to determine the effect of combining centrifugation with HIV-1 virion lysis on the sensitivity of the fourth-generation HIV Ag/Ab combo assay.

Results: When the 50 HIV-1 antibody-negative samples were run on the fourth-generation HIV Ag/Ab combo assay, 8 (16%) were positive following centrifugation, 13 (26%) were positive following lysis while 25 (50%) were positive after combining centrifugation with HIV-1 virion lysis.

We report a case of fulminant hepatitis in a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patient with aggressive adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma who received monotherapy with an anti-CCR4 monoclonal antibody, mogamulizumab, with decreased hepatitis B virus (HBV)- DNA levels by entecavir prophylaxis. Although HBV reactivation-related hepatitis was considered in the differential diagnosis, the patient did not meet the conventional criteria for HBV reactivation and was finally diagnosed with drug-induced hepatitis. Considering that the immunoenhancing effects of mogamulizumab can lead to HBV reactivation-related hepatitis in HBsAg-positive patients, we should differentiate drug-induced hepatitis from HBV reactivation, especially in patients receiving immunomodulatory drugs, if HBV-DNA levels are reduced by antiviral prophylaxis.

This enigmatic condition continues to capture medical attention due to affected patients displaying symptoms that parallel those seen in either classical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Parkinson's disease (PD).
