Acidosis drives mutagenesis and promotes the subversion of checkpoints and apoptotic mechanisms. Hypoxic tissues secrete cytokines that undermine normal anti-tumor surveillance by macrophages, turning them into accomplices and facilitators of invasion and angiogenesis.
