Background: Excessive reactive oxygen species from endothelial mitochondria in type 2 diabetes individuals (T2DM) may occur through multiple related mechanisms, including production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS), inner mitochondrial membrane (Δψ) hyperpolarization, changes in mitochondrial mass and membrane composition, and fission of the mitochondrial networks. Inner mitochondrial membrane proteins uncoupling protein-2 (UCP2) and prohibitin (PHB) can favorably impact mtROS and mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ). Circulating levels of UCP2 and PHB could potentially serve as biomarker surrogates for vascular health in patients with and without T2DM.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers conducted RNA sequencing on aortic tissue from CoA patients and found the downregulation of the natriuretic peptide receptor C (NPR-C) in areas affected by high blood pressure, which aligns with findings in a rabbit model of CoA.
  • * Their experiments revealed that decreased NPR-C activity disrupted normal blood vessel relaxation and calcium levels in the presence of certain peptides, and a specific gene variant was more common in CoA patients, potentially impacting hypertension treatment strategies.
