Background: Brachial plexus catheter placement at the interscalene level is beneficial for shoulder analgesia but presents logistical challenges due to the superficial nature of the plexus at this level, increased patient movement in the neck, and therefore higher likelihood for catheter dislodgement.

Methods: Patients requiring shoulder arthroscopy and suprascapular nerve decompression were identified. Under arthroscopic guidance, a catheter was placed percutaneously into the scalene medius muscle next to the suprascapular nerve and the upper trunk of the brachial plexus.

Based on clinical observation of several complications related to femoral arterial lines, the authors performed a larger study to further examine complications. The authors aimed to (1) describe the use patterns and incidence of major short-term complications associated with arterial cannulation for perioperative monitoring in children, and (2) describe the rates of major complications by anatomical site and age category of the patient.

Background: The use of spinal anesthesia in infants is seeing resurgence as an alternative to general anesthesia.

Aims: Our primary aims are to describe our institution's experience introducing a spinal anesthesia and sedation protocol for infants undergoing urologic surgery, to describe methods of improving prolonged anesthesia, and to describe the failure rate of spinal anesthesia in these patients. Introduction: Type I thyroplasty, or medialization larygoplasty (ML), is a procedure which improves the voice by medializing a vocal fold with a permanent implant. Anesthetic management of these cases is challenging because patients can require periods of deep sedation followed by fully awake moments for phonation to assess the implant size. We present our experience of ML with or without arytenoid adduction (AA) using a multimodal anesthetic regimen consisting of concurrent infusions of dexmedetomidine, remifentanil, and propofol.

We describe the use of dexmedetomidine for an awake neurosurgical procedure in a pregnant patient and quantify the effect of mannitol on intrauterine volume. A 27-year-old woman underwent a craniotomy, with intraprocedural motor and speech mapping, at 20 weeks of gestation. Sedation was maintained with dexmedetomidine.

Aims were to assess the prevalence of Papanicolaou (Pap) abnormalities found with cervical cancer screening in Agogo and Nkawie, communities in the Ashanti region of Ghana, and compare the correlation between Pap readings performed at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana, and at the Mayo Clinic cytology laboratory in Rochester, MN. Demographic data was collected and Pap tests were performed on women recruited for screening in the communities of Agogo (n=119) and Nkawie (n=255). The Pap tests were assessed by pathology laboratory staff at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Mayo Clinic.
