In brief Syncopal episodes are usually benign, but some causes can be life-threatening. The differential diagnosis is extensive and includes vasovagal reaction, decreased intravascular volume, metabolic disorders, cardiac disorders, medication use and abuse, Valsalva maneuver, and intracranial conditions.
