The United States has a well-trained, highly specialized physician workforce yet continues to have care gaps across the nation. Deficiencies in primary care and mental health specialties are most frequently cited, though critical shortages in multiple disciplines exist, particularly in rural areas. Sponsoring institutions of physician graduate medical education (GME) have created rural residency tracks with modest federal funding and minimal incentives, though efforts targeting shortages in these specialties and geographic locations have been limited.

Health reform requires well-trained primary care physicians with new skills. Teaching faculty need to develop proficiency to deliver care in new models and systems, to lead change, and to teach these skills to the next generation of clinicians. Title VII Section 747 of the Public Health Service Act, modified and reauthorized under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), is the only federal program that specifically supports the professional development of primary care faculty.

Objective: The study examined interest in treatment and treatment preferences and obstacles of low-income depressed parents.

Methods: A total of 273 primarily low-income, Hispanic parents of children aged seven to 17 attending an urban family medicine practice agreed to complete a survey by interview or self-report, including screening diagnoses and treatment history. Three groups were compared: major, subthreshold, and no depression.
