Introduction: Mutations in microRNA-96 (miR-96), a microRNA expressed within the hair cells (HCs) of the inner ear, result in progressive hearing loss in both mouse models and humans. In this study, we present the first HC-specific RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) dataset from newborn heterozygous, homozygous mutant, and wildtype mice.
Methods: Bulk RNA-seq was performed on HCs of newborn heterozygous, homozygous mutant, and wildtype mice.
Type 2 inflammatory responses are associated with worse prognosis in coccidioidomycosis. It is unclear whether patients with preexisting type 2 inflammation and atopic disorders are predisposed to disseminated coccidioidomycosis. A retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with disseminated coccidioidomycosis revealed no significant difference in the history of atopic disorders or eosinophilia as compared to those with isolated pulmonary disease.

Objective: To study the effect of implementing dextrose gel supplement with feeds in late preterm/term infants affected by asymptomatic hypoglycemia on reducing IV dextrose therapy.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), defibrillation, and epinephrine administration are pillars of advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Intraosseous (IO) access is an alternative route for epinephrine administration when intravenous (IV) access is unobtainable. Previous studies indicate the pharmacokinetics of epinephrine administration via IO and IV routes differ, but it is not known if the difference influences return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).

Importance: Pediatric jaw tumors are a rare clinical entity and are not well addressed in the otolaryngology literature. It is important that otolaryngologists be familiar with the clinical features, management, and outcomes associated with these lesions.
Objective: To review the clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of jaw tumors in children treated at a tertiary care academic center.
Introduction: Isolated aphonia induced by acute stroke is a rare phenomenon with only a few cases reported in the literature.
Case Presentation: We report an unusual case of a 44-year-old African-American man with a history of hypertension, smoking and cocaine use who developed acute aphonia secondary to simultaneous ischemic infarctions of the bilateral putamen nuclei.
Conclusion: We describe the clinical presentation of acute aphonia induced by bilateral putamen nuclei ischemic infarctions, correlating clinical symptoms with injury localization.
Viral vectors have been used to deliver a wide range of therapeutic genes to tumors. In this study, a novel tumor therapy was achieved by the delivery of a mammalian brain sodium channel, ASIC2a, carrying a mutation that renders it constitutively open. This channel was delivered to tumor cells using a herpes simplex virus-1/Epstein-Barr virus (HSV/EBV) hybrid amplicon vector in which gene expression was controlled by a tetracycline regulatory system (tet-on) with silencer elements.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe have developed a versatile, potent technique for imaging cells in culture and in vivo by expressing a metabolically biotinylated cell-surface receptor and visualizing it with labeled streptavidin moieties. The recombinant reporter protein, which incorporates a biotin acceptor peptide (BAP) between an N-terminal signal sequence and a transmembrane domain, (BAP-TM) was efficiently biotinylated by endogenous biotin ligase in mammalian cells with the biotin displayed on the cell surface. Tumors expressing the BAP-TM have high sensitivity for magnetic resonance and fluorescence tomographic imaging in vivo after intravascular injection of streptavidin conjugated to magnetic nanoparticles or fluorochromes, respectively.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To review studies investigating the following: whether exposing developing infants to antipsychotic medication during pregnancy and lactation is associated with increased risks of teratogenic, neonatal, and long-term neurobehavioural sequelae; whether schizophrenia itself affects pregnancy outcome; and whether the course of schizophrenia symptoms is altered by pregnancy and lactation.
Method: We summarize the results from articles identified via a MedLine search for the period January 1, 1966, to December 1, 2001.
Results: Women with schizophrenia are at increased risk for poor obstetrical outcomes, including preterm delivery, low birth weight, and neonates who are small for their gestational age.
