Purpose: One manifestation of systemic inequities in communication sciences and disorders (CSD) is the chronic underreporting and underrepresentation of sex, gender, race, and ethnicity in research. The present study characterized recent demographic reporting practices and representation of participants across CSD research.

Methods: We systematically reviewed and extracted key reporting and participant data from empirical studies conducted in the United States (US) with human participants published in the year 2020 in journals by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA; = 407 articles comprising a total = 80,058 research participants, search completed November 2021).

The retention of physicians and other health care professionals in rehabilitation medicine is a critical issue that affects patients' access to care and the quality of the care they receive. In the United States and globally, there are known shortages of clinicians including, but not limited to, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists. These shortages are predicted to worsen in the future.

  • The majority of studies (60%) were randomized controlled trials, mainly looking at patients with head and neck cancer, and focused primarily on targeted physical exercises as prehabilitation interventions, with adherence and feasibility being the key outcomes measured.

Objective: We describe provider documented counseling patterns and perception regarding HPV vaccination among patients with a history of cervical dysplasia.

Methods: All patients ages 21-45 who underwent colposcopy at a single academic medical center from 2018 to 2020were sent a self-administered survey through the electronic medical record patient portal to assess their attitudes regarding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Demographic information, HPV vaccination history, and documented obstetrics and gynecology provider counseling at the time of colposcopy were examined.

Purpose: Community aphasia groups serve an important purpose in enhancing the quality of life and psychosocial well-being of individuals with chronic aphasia. Here, we describe the Aphasia Group of Middle Tennessee, a community aphasia group with a 17-year (and continuing) history, housed within Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Method: We describe in detail the history, philosophy, design, curriculum, and facilitation model of this group.

Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to identify parent education procedures implemented in intervention studies focused on expressive verbal communication for nonverbal (NV) or minimally verbal (MV) children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Parent education has been shown to be an essential component in the habilitation of individuals with ASD. Parents of individuals with ASD who are NV or MV may particularly benefit from parent education in order to provide opportunities for communication and to support their children across the life span.

This systematic review examined definitions of "nonverbal" or "minimally verbal" and assessment measures used to evaluate communication in intervention studies focusing on improving expressive verbal communication in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We reviewed sample size, number of participants, participant age, and male/female representation. Our analysis yielded relatively few studies with non/minimally verbal children with ASD focusing on verbal expressive communication.
