It was hypothesized that the longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle proteome, phosphoproteome, and metabolome could explain postmortem metabolism and tenderness differences in muscle from cattle supplemented zinc (Zn) and/or ractopamine hydrochloride (RH). High percentage Angus steers (N = 20) were fed in a 2 × 2 factorial assigned to Zn and RH treatments: control (CON; n = 10; analyzed 36 mg Zn/kg dry matter [DM]) or supranutritional Zn supplementation (SUPZN; n = 10; control diet + 60 mg Zn/kg DM [from ZnSO4] + 60 mg Zn/kg DM [from Zn-amino acid complex]) for the entire 89-d trial. During the 28 d before harvest, steers were blocked by body weight within Zn treatments to RH treatments of 0 (NO; n = 10) or 300 mg (RAC; n = 10) per steer per day.

Corn silage is the predominant mechanically harvested forage source for feedlot cattle production in the United States because of high yield. Alternatively, because of multiple cuttings per year and lower annual cost, the use of alfalfa or other forages, may increase opportunities for manure spreading, perennial soil cover, pollinator habitat, and greater carbon sequestration. The objective of this trial was to determine the feeding value of alfalfa haylage when replacing corn silage in growing cattle diets.

The objectives were to assess the effects of dietary Sweet Bran (Cargill Corn Milling, Blair, NE) on performance and feeding behavior of feedlot steers and determine if terminal implant pen sorting affects performance, feeding behavior, and liver abscess (LA) rate. Two hundred sixteen Angus-cross steers (253 ± 18 kg) were stratified by body weight (BW) to 36 pens. To assess the efficacy of bis-glycinate bound Zn, 36 crossbred wethers (34 ± 2 kg) were sorted by body weight into three groups and stagger started on a Zn-deficient diet (18 mg Zn/kg dry matter [DM]; 22.5% neutral detergent fiber [NDF]) for 45 d prior to a 15-d metabolism period (10 d adaptation and 5 d collection). On day 46, lambs were randomly assigned to dietary treatments (four lambs treatment-1group-1): no supplemental Zn (CON) or 15 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM (ZINC) as Zn sulfate (ZS) or bis-glycinate (GLY; Plexomin Zn, Phytobiotics).
