Article Synopsis
  • Pneumococcal disease (PD) significantly impacts young children, and a study was conducted to analyze its incidence among those with commercial or Medicaid insurance in the US from 1998 to 2019.
  • The study found that invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and all-cause pneumonia (ACP) incidence rates dropped considerably over the years, particularly in children aged 0-6 months, with higher rates observed in rural areas compared to urban ones.
  • Despite the overall decline in disease rates, Medicaid-insured children experienced higher annual incidence rates for both IPD and ACP, indicating a persistent disease burden within this population.

Children with rare cholestatic liver diseases, such as Alagille syndrome, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, and biliary atresia typically require liver transplantation (LT). The objective of this analysis was to assess the economic burden of LT on these patients. Health care resource utilization and costs associated with pediatric LT were retrospectively assessed using insurance claims data from the US IBM MarketScan Commercial and Medicaid databases collected between October 2015 and December 2019.
