Lithium is an effective mood-stabilizer in the treatment of bipolar affective disorder. While glycogen synthase kinase 3-mediated and inositol depletion-dependent effects of lithium have been described extensively in literature, there is very little knowledge about the consequences of lithium treatment on vesicle recycling and neurotransmitter availability. In the present study we have examined acute and chronic effects of lithium on synaptic vesicle recycling using primary hippocampal neurons.

Article Synopsis
  • Antipsychotic drugs like haloperidol, chlorpromazine, clozapine, and risperidone effectively treat schizophrenia but their behavior in the brain remains unclear.
  • Using various microscopic techniques and experiments on rat neurons, researchers found these drugs accumulate in synaptic vesicles and are released when neurons are active, increasing drug levels outside the cells.
  • The released drugs inhibit synaptic transmission by affecting the release of vesicles, showcasing a feedback mechanism that depends on how intensely the neurons are stimulated.
