A comprehensive oxidation mechanism was investigated for amaranthin-type betacyanins with a specific glucuronosylglucosyl moiety isolated from ' using liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS) and LC-Quadrupole-Orbitrap-MS (LC-Q-Orbitrap-MS). By employing one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) NMR, this study elucidates the chemical structures of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS)-oxidized celosianins for the first time. These findings demonstrate alternative oxidation pathways for acylated betacyanins compared to well-known betanidin, betanin, and gomphrenin pigments.

This study evaluated the potential of dwarf morning-glory Convolvulus tricolor (Convolvulaceae) plants and their hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes for rhizoextraction of heavy metals ions from the liquid medium under aseptic growth conditions. Both the young C. tricolor plants and the generated hairy root culture efficiently removed Cr, Ni, and Pb ions from the liquid cultivation medium.

Plants are sessile organisms that have a remarkable developmental plasticity, which ensures their optimal adaptation to environmental stresses. Plant cell totipotency is an extreme example of such plasticity, whereby somatic cells have the potential to form plants via direct shoot organogenesis or somatic embryogenesis in response to various exogenous and/or endogenous signals. Protoplasts provide one of the most suitable systems for investigating molecular mechanisms of totipotency, because they are effectively single cell populations.

Betacyanins and betaxanthins were characterized and determined in an intensely pigmented red-colored callus culture of Celosia cristata L. (Amaranthaceae).
