Metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) is a rare but life-threatening complication. We report a case of MALA in a man aged 71 years who was treated with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The patient was brought to the hospital for prolonged and gradual worsening gastrointestinal symptoms.

Colossal negative thermal expansion in reduced layered ruthenate.

Large negative thermal expansion (NTE) has been discovered during the last decade in materials of various kinds, particularly materials associated with a magnetic, ferroelectric or charge-transfer phase transition. Such NTE materials have attracted considerable attention for use as thermal-expansion compensators. Here, we report the discovery of giant NTE for reduced layered ruthenate.

Molecular Structural Analysis of Spider's Capture Thread and Viscid Droplets Studied by Microscopic FT-IR Spectroscopy.

The molecular structural analysis of capture thread, including its viscid droplets of oriental golden orb-web spider Nephila clavata, has been performed by microscopic FT-IR spectroscopy. The obtained spectra of capture threads with and without viscid droplets indicate that the features in the region of 1400 - 1000 cm will be useful as marker bands for the degree of the dissolving of viscid droplet; further, the bands at 1395 and 1335 cm are attributable to the components of anchoring granules located at the inner side of viscid droplets. By recrystallization and its infrared measurements, the main chemical component of viscid droplets is assignable to glycosylated proline.

Treatments and Outcomes of Patients With Extranodal Natural Killer/T-Cell Lymphoma Diagnosed Between 2000 and 2013: A Cooperative Study in Japan.

Purpose To elucidate the management and outcomes of patients with extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL), who were diagnosed between 2000 and 2013 in Japan. Patients and Methods Data from 358 patients with ENKL diagnosed between 2000 and 2013 from 31 institutes were retrospectively analyzed. Results Patients' median age was 58 years, and 257 (72%) had localized disease.

Iron arsenides with three-dimensional FeAs layer networks: Ca(FePt)PtAs (n = 2, 3).

We report the comprehensive studies between synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility experiments for the iron arsenides Ca(FePt)PtAs for n = 2 and 3. Both structures crystallize in the monoclinic space group P2/m (#11) with three-dimensional FeAs structures. The horizontal FeAs layers are bridged by inclined FeAs planes through edge-sharing FeAs5 square pyramids, resulting in triangular tunneling structures rather than the simple layered structures found in conventional iron arsenides.

MYD88, CD79B, and CARD11 gene mutations in CD5-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Background: CD5-positive (CD5 ) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is characterized by frequent central nervous system recurrence and a predominant activated B-cell-like nature. Primary DLBCL in sanctuary sites (DLBCL-SS) also demonstrates these features, and >70% of patients harbor myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MYD88) (L265P) and CD79B mutations. The objective of the current study was to elucidate a possible relationship between CD5 DLBCL and DLBCL-SS.

Pretreatment prognostic nutritional index is a significant predictor of prognosis in patients with cervical cancer treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

This study investigated whether pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) are prognostic factors in patients with cervical cancer who undergo concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) and radiotherapy (RT). A total of 131 patients who underwent CCRT and RT for cervical cancer were retrospectively investigated and the correlations of NLR, PLR and PNI with clinical parameters and prognosis were assessed in CCRT and RT. The CCRT and RT groups had a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 41.

Fungi in soil play pivotal roles in nutrient cycling, pest controls, and plant community succession in terrestrial ecosystems. Despite the ecosystem functions provided by soil fungi, our knowledge of the assembly processes of belowground fungi has been limited. In particular, we still have limited knowledge of how diverse functional groups of fungi interact with each other in facilitative and competitive ways in soil.

Conventional food-web theory assumes that nutrients from dissolved organic matter are transferred to aquatic vertebrates via long nutrient pathways involving multiple eukaryotic species as intermediary nutrient transporters. Here, using larvae of the salamander Hynobius retardatus as a model system, we provide experimental evidence of a shortcut nutrient pathway by showing that H. retardatus larvae can use dissolved amino acids for their growth without eukaryotic mediation.

Bird diversity and abundance in organic and conventional apple orchards in northern Japan.

Many studies have investigated the benefits of agri-environmental schemes, such as organic farming, on biodiversity conservation in annual systems, but their effectiveness in perennial systems is less well understood, particularly in bird communities in temperate regions of Asia. This study examined the effects of organic farming practices on species richness and abundance of breeding birds in apple orchards in northern Japan. Bird counts were conducted in six pairs of organic and conventional orchards during the breeding season in April and May 2015.

Successful treatment by prednisolone for interstitial pneumonia associated with anagrelide in a patient with essential thrombocythemia.

Anagrelide is a cytoreductive agent for essential thrombocythemia and its common side effects are anemia, headache, palpitation, diarrhea, and fluid retention. However, severe pulmonary adverse effects are rare. A 66-year-old Japanese man with essential thrombocythemia presented with hemoptysis 2 months after starting anagrelide treatment.

Infections due to Leuconostoc species have been reported in various immunocompromised patients, but little is known about such infection in patients with hematologic malignancies. We report a case of Leuconostoc infection in a 44-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cryopreservation of fish sperm offers the practical applications in the selective breeding and biodiversity conservation. However, because of the lack of cryopreservation methods for fish eggs and embryos, maternally inherited cytoplasmic compartments cannot be successfully preserved. We previously developed an alternative method to derive functional eggs and sperm from cryopreserved whole testis by transplanting testicular cells into female and male recipients.

Prognostic significance of HLA class I and II expression in patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma treated with standard chemoimmunotherapy.

Loss of tumor cell human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is an immune escape mechanism for malignancies. However, the effect of low HLA class I or class II expression in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with chemoimmunotherapy with the monoclonal antibody rituximab is largely unknown. We retrospectively analyzed samples and other data from 144 patients with DLBCL who were newly diagnosed in our institution and treated with standard R-CHOP therapy.

Cortical blindness induced by hepatic encephalopathy: case report and review of published case reports.

Case: Cortical blindness induced by hepatic encephalopathy is an extremely rare complication and its epidemiology has not been studied in great detail. We report a 63-year-old man with liver cirrhosis who developed sudden bilateral visual impairment.

Outcome: On arrival at hospital, the patient had orientation disturbance, slurred speech, and mild disturbance of consciousness with impaired vision (light sense).
