Article Synopsis
  • Microplastics are increasingly recognized for their ability to accumulate pollutants, including herbicides known as ionic liquids (ILs), affecting how these substances migrate between water and land ecosystems.
  • The study synthesized two types of herbicidal ILs and examined their interaction with polyethylene (PE) microplastics, finding that the different components behave independently and can pose environmental risks.
  • Results show that microplastics can hinder the breakdown of these herbicides and potentially increase their toxicity to soil bacteria, emphasizing the need for further investigation into the ecological impacts of microplastic accumulation.

Microplastics represent a novel category of environmental pollutants, and understanding their interactions with typical xenobiotics is crucial. In this study, we investigated the impact of ionic liquids (ILs) containing herbicidal anions, namely glyphosate [Glyph] and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate [2,4-D], and the surfactant cation - dodecyltrimethylammonium [CTMA] on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) microplastics. The aim of the study was to assess the sorption capacity of microplastics that were present in both untreated and aged form using standard and modified Fenton methods.

A novel UV-light-curable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate matrix composite material with unmodified and methacryloxyl-grafted TiO and TiO-ZrO systems was developed and tested as a potential coating material for medical components. The main goal of the research was to evaluate how the addition of (un)modified inorganic oxide fillers affects the properties of the composition (viscosity, UV/Vis spectra), the kinetics of photocuring (photo-DSC), and the morphological (SEM), physicochemical, and thermal properties (DSC, TGA) of the resulting composites. The applied filler functionalization process decreased their polarity and changed their size, BET surface area, and pore volume, which influenced the viscosity and kinetics of the photocurable system.

Recently, much attention has been focused on the application of the Ionic Liquids (ILs) with herbicidal activity in agriculture. It has been suggested that through the appropriate selection of cations and anions, one can adjust the properties of ILs, particularly the hydrophobicity, solubility, bioavailability, toxicity. In practical agricultural conditions, it will be beneficial to reduce the mobility of herbicidal anions, such as the commonly applied 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid [2,4-D] in the soil.

A series of piperidinium-based herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) were synthesized and investigated. The designed HILs, obtained with high yields, consisted of cation 1-alkyl-1-methylpiperidinium with surface activity and a commercially available herbicidal anion: (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxy)benzoates (dicamba). The above-mentioned compounds were characterized in terms of surface activity and phytotoxicity.

Removal of toxic contaminants such as Pb(II) from waste solutions is environmentally requested. Therefore, in this paper, for potential novel sorbents, mesoporous ionic liquid-functionalized silicas were synthesized and tested for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The successful synthesis of the adsorbents was proved by nuclear magnetic resonance (Si and C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and elemental analysis.

The main goal of the study was the hydrothermal-assisted synthesis of TiO-ZnO systems and their subsequent use in photoactive processes. Additionally, an important objective was to propose a method for synthesizing TiO-ZnO systems enabling the control of crystallinity and morphology through epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, in the case of materials containing a small addition of ZnO (≥5 wt.

The elimination of antibiotics occurring in the natural environment has become a great challenge in recent years. Among other techniques, the photocatalytic degradation of this type of pollutant seems to be a promising approach. Thus, the search for new photoactive materials is currently of great importance.

Three different 3D fibrous-like NiO/Ni(OH)/Ni‑carbonized spongin-based materials were prepared via a simple sorption-reduction method. Depending on the support used, the catalysts were composed of carbon, nickel oxide, nickel hydroxide and zero-valent nickel, with the surface content of the nickel-containing phase in the range 15.2-26.

One of the directions of development in the textiles industry is the search for new technologies for producing modern multifunctional products. New solutions are sought to obtain materials that will protect humans against the harmful effects of the environment, including such factors as the activity of microorganisms and UV radiation. Products made of natural cellulose fibers are often used.

The TiO-FeO composite materials were fabricated via the hydrothermal-assisted technique. It was determined how the molar ratio of TiO to FeO influences the crystalline structure and morphology of the synthesized composite materials. The effect of the molar ratio of components on the antibacterial activity was also analyzed.

In the efforts for the removal of hazardous materials from the environment biological processes are a valuable tool. Although much attention has been paid to the changes in bacteria at the omics level, another, physical-chemical perspective on the issue is essential, as little is known of microbial response to continuous exposition on harmful substances. This study provides in-depth characterization of the physical-chemical parameters of bacterial biomass after hydrocarbons exposure.

Hydrothermal crystallization was used to synthesize an advanced hybrid system containing titania and molybdenum disulfide (with a TiO:MoS molar ratio of 1:1). The way in which the conditions of hydrothermal treatment (180 and 200 °C) and thermal treatment (500 °C) affect the physicochemical properties of the products was determined. A physicochemical analysis of the fabricated materials included the determination of the microstructure and morphology (scanning and transmission electron microscopy-SEM and TEM), crystalline structure (X-ray diffraction method-XRD), chemical surface composition (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-EDS) and parameters of the porous structure (low-temperature N sorption), as well as the chemical surface concentration (X-ray photoelectron spectroscop-XPS).

Binary oxide systems containing TiO and CuO were synthesized using hydrothermal treatment and shown to have enhanced antibacterial properties. A detailed investigation was made of the effect of the molar ratio of components (TiO:CuO = 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9) on the physicochemical parameters and antibacterial activity. Analysis of morphology (SEM, TEM and HRTEM) confirmed the presence of spherical and sheet-shaped particles.

Titania has properties that enable it to be used in a variety of applications, including self-cleaning surfaces, air and water purification systems, hydrogen evolution, and photoelectrochemical conversion. In order to improve the properties of titanium dioxide, modifications are made to obtain oxide/hybrid systems that are intended to have the properties of both components. In particular, zinc oxide, zirconia and molybdenum disulfide have been proposed as the second component of binary systems due to their antibacterial, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties.
