Introduction: Since the first report of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in Poland, in 1996, these strains have spread in Polish hospitals, mainly due to selective pressure associated with increased use of vancomycin in the treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococci and Clostridium difficile.
