To clarify the mechanism of the effects of angiotensin II AT(1) receptor antagonists on adipose tissue, we treated 8 week-old male Wistar Kyoto rats with the angiotensin II AT(1) receptor antagonist Candesartan cilexetil (10 mg/kg/day) for 18 weeks. Candesartan cilexetil reduced body weight gain, decreased fat tissue mass due to hypotrophy of epididymal and retroperitoneal adipose tissue and decreased adipocyte size without changing the number of adipocytes. Candesartan cilexetil decreased serum leptin levels and epididymal leptin mRNA, increased serum adiponectin levels and epididymal adiponectin mRNA, decreased epididymal tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) mRNA, and increased fatty acid synthase mRNA.

In this study we analyzed levels of leptin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), corticosterone, interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), and nitric oxide (NO) production on days 10 and 22 of adjuvant arthritis (AA) in male Long Evans rats to ascertain possible relationship of leptin with its modulators during the early and late phases of chronic inflammation. The circulating leptin levels were significantly reduced already on day 10 of AA compared to controls (1.

The aim of this study was to investigate the gene expression of components of the renin-angiotensin system, angiotensinogen, renin, angiotensin-converting enzyme and AT(1) receptor, in rat mammary gland and in chemically induced carcinoma of this gland. Retinoids are known to inhibit cell proliferation and induce cell differentiation so they are considered as a promising chemopreventive agents.
