Purpose Of Review: Peripheral nerve blocks are performed using local anesthetics that are commonly performed prior to surgery to either be the sole anesthetic and/or for postoperative pain management. Interscalene blocks are a specific type of nerve block that targets the superior and middle trunks of the brachial plexus inhibiting transmission of pain signals from the upper extremities to the central nervous system making them useful in mitigating pain following surgeries involving the shoulder, upper arm, and elbow.

Recent Findings: Previously, interscalene blocks were performed with a nerve stimulator, which is an instrument designed to generate a twitch in surrounding muscles to verify the anesthetic block was placed in the correct location.

Tissue factor (TF) and protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) have been associated with the progression of cancer, while integrins are essential for the adhesion and migration of cancer cells. This study aimed to explore the cross-talk between the TF:FVIIa complex, PAR2 signaling, and the expression of integrin α1 in cervical cancer cells. Utilizing data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), the research examined the relationship between the TF and PAR2 genes and the integrin α1 gene (ITGA1) in reproductive cancers, revealing a positive correlation between integrin α1 expression and both TF and PAR2 genes.

Objective: The objective of this retrospective study is to identify factors associated with loss to follow-up for postconcussion clearance in pediatric patients by comparing loss to follow-up and full clearance patients.

Study Design: This retrospective single-center cohort study analyzed 140 consecutive patients at a pediatric concussion clinic of a safety-net hospital for loss to follow-up, defined as not achieving clearance at last appointment. Univariate and multivariate regression models were fit on variables of interest, including demographic, mechanism and severity of concussion, and characteristics of the first evaluation postconcussion and follow-up management.

Deep-tissue extension of perianal and perirectal abscesses, while rare, requires timely diagnosis and emergent surgical intervention to prevent serious secondary complications. This report evaluates a case of intra-abdominal and extraperitoneal extension of a persistent perirectal abscess that required comprehensive irrigation, drainage, and debridement of multiple abscess-associated cavities. This report follows the case of a 24-year-old African-American female presenting to the ED with mild fevers, nausea, abdominal distension, and lower abdominal pain following a persistent perirectal abscess that had not resolved following conservative outpatient antibiotic management one week prior.
