The present study explored the use of chitosan films functionalized with antioxidants extracted from Larix decidua Mill. bark for active packaging. The pristine chitosan and extract-incorporated chitosan films were evaluated for their structural, physico-mechanical, thermal, viscoelastic and antioxidant properties using advanced characterization techniques.

Background: The mass influx of immigrants from tuberculosis-endemic countries into Israel was followed by a considerable increase in the incidence of tuberculosis (TB). All contacts of active TB patients are obliged to be screened by tuberculin skin tests (TST) and, if found positive, prophylactic treatment is considered.

Objectives: To assess the utility of interferon-gamma (IFNγ)-release assay with a prolonged follow-up in preventing unnecessary anti-TB therapy in individuals with suspected false positive results.

Agricultural and forest residues obtained after harvesting are promising renewable sources, suitable as a source of pulp for cellulose nanocrystal manufacturing. Cavitation-assisted softening of the lignin-carbohydrate matrix offers sample opportunity for cellulose fibril liberation and degradation of amorphous cellulose. The present work addresses cavitation assisted cellulose fibril and crystal liberation and film forming properties of the supernatant phase of treated agricultural and forest residues.

Cellulose fiber sheets impregnated with saccharide capped-ZnO nanoparticles were used as bioactive materials for antibody immobilization. First, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized in the presence of glucose (monosaccharide), sucrose (disaccharide) as well as alginic acid and starch (polysaccharides). The pine cellulose fibers were then modified by the obtained saccharide capped nanoparticles and further incorporated into the sheets.

Introduction: Semaphorin 3A (sema3A) and neuropilin-1 (NP-1) play a regulatory role in immune responses and have a demonstrated effect on the course of collagen induced arthritis. This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of sema3A and NP-1 in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the specific effect of sema3A on the auto-reactive properties of B cells in SLE patients.

Methods: Thirty two SLE and 24 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients were assessed and compared with 40 normal individuals.
