Bacterial infections pose an increasingly worrisome threat to the health of humankind, with antibiotic resistance contributing significantly to this burden. With current conventional antibiotics perpetuating the problem, and a paucity in developing antibiotics, drug delivery systems incorporating nanotechnology appear promising. As such, a dual enzyme-responsive multifunctional nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) incorporating farnesol (FAN) and triglycerol monostearate (TGMS), was conceptualized for the codelivery of vancomycin (VCM) and antimicrobial peptide (AMP) to enhance the antibacterial activity of VCM.

Background: Plant-based diets (PBDs) have gained popularity in recent years due to their co-benefits for human and planetary health. Although clinical guidelines now recommend well-balanced PBDs, it remains unclear how dietitians in the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (ROI) view such diets and their implementation in practice. This study aimed to evaluate the perspectives of registered dietitians (RDs) on the role of a whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD) in clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is the top cause of cancer deaths in Canada, with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) being the most common type.
  • Timely molecular profiling using tissue biopsies is crucial for choosing effective targeted therapies, but challenges often lead to delays in testing and treatment.
  • A multidisciplinary team in Ontario has proposed criteria for reimbursing liquid biopsies, which analyze tumor DNA in blood and could provide a quicker, less invasive alternative to tissue biopsies, aiming to improve treatment access and outcomes.

A multi-disciplinary symposium on early-age onset cancer (EAOC) was held in October 2023 to explore challenges experienced by this rapidly growing population. A major outcome of the symposium was recognition of the remarkable similarities of EAOC patients' journeys across cancer sites. Prevention and early detection of cancer are hindered by a lack of awareness among patients and family doctors that cancer can and does occur in younger persons.

Nanodrug delivery systems (NDDS) continue to be explored as novel strategies enhance therapy outcomes and combat microbial resistance. The need for the formulation of smart drug delivery systems for targeting infection sites calls for the engineering of responsive chemical designs such as dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs). Stimuli response due to DCBs incorporated into nanosystems are emerging as an alternative way to target infection sites, thus enhancing the delivery of antibacterial agents.

  • Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a rare but serious complication in solid organ transplant patients, and chemotherapy can lead to significant side effects.
  • The TIDaL trial tested the safety and effectiveness of ibrutinib, alongside a risk-based treatment strategy, for newly diagnosed patients with CD20+ B-cell PTLD.
  • While ibrutinib did not meet the effectiveness threshold anticipated, the study highlighted the potential to reduce exposure to harsher chemotherapy treatments for patients in the low-risk category, indicating a direction for future research.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a relapsing and remitting condition that requires continuous treatment to reduce the risk of relapse. Alongside genetic factors, diet and lifestyle factors are heavily implicated in the pathogenesis of the disease, with diets high in meat and ultra-processed foods and low in fibre-rich plant foods thought to be central to the disease process. There is considerable interest in using dietary interventions to prevent, treat and IBD, with the hope that this can limit and, in some cases, even eliminate the use of pharmaceutical interventions.

Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is a multi-faceted construct influenced by a myriad of environmental, demographic, and individual characteristics. Our understanding of these influencers remains highly limited in neurodevelopmental conditions. Existing research in this area is sparse, highly siloed by diagnosis labels, and focused on symptoms.

Bendamustine is among the most effective chemotherapeutics for indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (iNHL), but trial reports of significant toxicity, including opportunistic infections and excess deaths, led to prescriber warnings. We conducted a multicenter observational study evaluating bendamustine toxicity in real-world practice. Patients receiving at least 1 dose of bendamustine with/without rituximab (R) for iNHL were included.

Article Synopsis
  • - The COMPLETE trial found that complete revascularization for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients with multivessel coronary artery disease significantly reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events compared to focusing only on the culprit lesion.
  • - The study specifically analyzed the effects of complete revascularization in patients with and without diabetes, noting that diabetes leads to a worse prognosis post-STEMI.
  • - Results showed that complete revascularization improved outcomes consistently for both groups, with no significant difference in effectiveness between diabetics and non-diabetics.

A significant proportion of cancers could be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle behaviours. In addition, healthy lifestyle factors can have a positive impact on cancer outcomes and survival. Yet, most physicians, including oncologists, do not dedicate a significant amount of time addressing these factors with their patients, who instead look to mainstream media and other non-medical sources for information.

More than 2 million people live with multiple sclerosis worldwide and the prevalence has been increasing over time. Patients living with multiple sclerosis often explore diet and lifestyle interventions as a means of managing their symptoms and reducing reliance on medication; yet, these approaches are rarely discussed with their physicians. Currently, there is a lack of evidence on when to stop disease-modifying therapies (DMT), and recent research showed no statistically significant difference in the time between relapses when comparing participants who stopped DMT to those who did not, especially over the age of 45.
