The United Nations World Drug Report published in 2022 alarmed that the global market of illicit drugs is steadily expanding in space and scale. Substances of abuse are usually perceived in the light of threats to human health and public security, while the environmental aspects of their use and subsequent emissions usually remain less explored. However, as with other human activities, drug production, trade, and consumption of drugs may leave their environmental mark.

We have asked Ukrainian scientists how they have been able to persist in pursuing their research since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February of 2022. We thank the scientists who were willing to share their thoughts and experiences; the views expressed are those of the contributors alone.

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) continues to cause substantial health and economic burdens, and its target of elimination may not be reached in 2030 without further efforts in diagnostics, non-pharmaceutical prevention measures, vaccination, and treatment. Current therapeutic options in chronic HBV, based on interferons and/or nucleos(t)ide analogs, suppress the virus replication but do not eliminate the pathogen and suffer from several constraints. This paper reviews the progress on biotechnological approaches in functional and definitive HBV treatments, including gene-editing tools, i.

Global warming and human-induced eutrophication drive the occurrence of various cyanotoxins in aquatic environments. These metabolites reveal diversified mechanisms of action, encompassing cyto-, neuro-, hepato-, nephro-, and neurotoxicity, and pose a threat to aquatic biota and human health. In the present paper, we review data on the occurrence of the most studied cyanotoxins, microcystins, nodularins, cylindrospermopsin, anatoxins, and saxitoxins, in the aquatic environment, as well as their potential bioaccumulation and toxicity in fish.

Tardigrades are ubiquitous microinvertebrates exhibiting extreme tolerance to various environmental stressors like low and high temperatures, lack of water, or high radiation. Although exact pathways behind the tardigrade extremotolerance are yet to be elucidated, some molecules involved have been identified. Their evidenced properties may lead to novel opportunities in biomedical and pharmacological development.

Pharmaceutical pollution of water bodies is among the top-notch environmental health risks all over the world. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of two common pharmaceuticals namely ibuprofen and gemfibrozil on zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations. In zebrafish liver, gemfibrozil caused a decrease in glutathione and glutathione transferase and an increase in catalase but had no effect on lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation.

The vaccination campaigns brought hope to minimizing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) burden. However, the emergence of novel, highly transmissible Omicron lineage of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the waning of neutralizing antibodies a few months after vaccination has brought concerns over the vaccine efficacy. The present work analyzed the relationships between COVID-19 vaccine coverage (completion of primary course and booster dose intake) in the European Economic Area and rates of infection, hospitalizations, admissions to intensive care units (ICU), and deaths during the Omicron wave in the first quarter of 2022 (January-April).

Agrochemicals can adversely affect biodiversity, environment and human health, and commonly occur in mixtures with poorly characterized toxic mechanisms and health hazards. Here, we evaluated the individual and mixture toxicities of Roundup and chlorpyrifos in environmentally relevant concentrations to zebrafish using molecular and biochemical indices. Studied pesticides alone and in combination caused depletion of total antioxidant capacity and cellular thiols, overproduction of ROS, accumulation of oxidative lesions and elevated DNA damage in zebrafish liver.

Biofouling causes massive economical losses in the maritime sector creating an urgent need for effective and ecologically non-harmful antifouling materials. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod coatings show promise as an antifouling material; however, the toxicity of ZnO nanorods to marine organisms is not known. We compared the toxicity of suspended ZnO nanorods (NR) with that of ZnO nanoparticles (NP) and ionic Zn in a marine bivalve Mytilus edulis exposed for two weeks to 10 or 100 μg Zn L of ZnO NPs, NRs or Zn, or to immobilized NRs.

The diurinal rhythms of a total antioxidant activity of a saliva were investigated depending on activity of the inflammatory process in a liver of children with chronic virus hepatitis HBV and HCV. The circadian rhythms were found desynchronized, which was showed in lowering of the mesor value, oscillations amplitude, and a rhythm inversion and transformation, as an additional biorhythmological criterion of the presence of the chronic hepatitis of a viral etiology. A tendency of a circadian rhythm to remain with a daily acrophasis but with a law level of amplitude oscillations and a mesor was to be observed after the treatment of children with inactive HBV.

The daily rhythms of cortisol (C) and serotonin (S) concentrations were investigated in saliva of children with chronic viral hepatitis HBV and HCV. The changes in chronostructure of C and S rhythms were revealed to depend on the viral type and an intensity of the liver inflammatory process. The circadian rhythms of C and S were found to be desynchronized which was manifested as quantitative (period) and qualitative (mesor value, amplitude of oscillations, daily acro- and miniphase) changes in the rhythm.
