As a form of discrimination, ableism impacts access to and the experience of clinical care for patients with disabilities as well as the daily experiences of learners and clinicians with disabilities. Ableist beliefs and practices conflict with physicians' professional responsibilities and legal obligations to provide care that is nondiscriminatory and accessible. An actionable pedagogical approach within medical education is needed to prepare a physician workforce that is able to meaningfully identify and mitigate ableism at all levels of the health care system.

We report for the first time the successful acquisition of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data using an unconventional same-metal PCB-based three-electrode system. Conventional three-electrode systems primarily require expensive and bulky electrodes, and a high volume of analytes to conduct electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies. The miniaturized PCB-based three-electrode system used in this work requires only trace amounts of analytes in the order of 10-20 μL owing to the design of the electrode sensor.

A conductive cotton hydrogel with graphene and ions can come into contact with electrodes in solid electrolytes at the molecular level, leading to a more efficient electrochemical process in supercapacitors. The inherently soft nature of cotton mixed with hydrogel provides superior flexibility of the electrolyte, which benefits the devices in gaining high flexibility. Herein, we report on the current progress in solid-state hydrogel electrolytes based on 3D pure cotton/graphene and present an overview of the future direction of research.

Conventional three-electrode systems used in electrochemical measurement demand time-consuming and maintenance intensive procedures to enable accurate and repeatable electrochemical measurements. Traditionally, different metal configurations are used to establish the electrochemical gradient required to acquire the redox activity, and vary between different electrochemical measurement platforms. However, in this work, we report using the same metal (gold) for the counter, working and reference electrodes fabricated on a miniaturized printed circuit board (PCB) for a much simpler design.

Opportunities for early medical student exposure to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) are desirable for promoting the field as a career choice and are useful for introducing students to the care of people with disabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted medical education and caused the cancellation of many in-person clinical programs, including the Medical Student Summer Clinical Externship in PM&R supported by the Association of Academic Physiatrists. This article describes the process by which an in-person summer clinical externship program was effectively converted into a Virtual PM&R Experience using a combination of independent assignments and small-group sessions.

Solvent evaporation and leakage of liquid electrolytes that restrict the practicality of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) motivate the quest for the development of stable and ionic conductive electrolyte. Gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) fits the criteria, but it still suffers from low efficiency due to insufficient segmental motion within the electrolytes. Therefore, incorporating metal oxide nanofiller is one of the approaches to enhance the performance of electrolytes due to the presence of cross-linking centers that can be coordinated with the polymer segments.

Reconfigurable arrays of 2D nanomaterials are essential for the realization of switchable and intelligent material systems. Using liquid crystals (LCs) as a medium represents a promising approach, in principle, to enable such control. In practice, however, this approach is hampered by the difficulty of achieving stable dispersions of nanomaterials.

We describe the influence of competing self-organizing phenomena on the formation of cholesteric mesophase in liquid crystalline brush block terpolymers (LCBBTs) and liquid crystalline random brush terpolymers (LCRBTs) containing chromonic molecules. A library of LCBBTs and LCRBTs are synthesized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene side-chain functionalized monomers comprising cholesteryl mesogen (NBCh), chromonic xanthenone (NBXan), and poly(ethylene glycol) (NBMPEG). Compression molded films of LCRBTs containing chromonic molecules display multilevel hierarchical structure in which cholesteric mesophase co-exists with π-π stacking of the chromonic mesophase along with PEG microphase segregated domains.

Optically driven ordering transitions are rarely observed in macromolecular systems, often because of kinetic limitations. Here, we report a series of block co-oligomers (BCOs) that rapidly order and disorder at room temperature in response to optical illumination, and the absence thereof. The system is a triblock where rigid azobenzene (Azo) mesogens are attached to each end of a flexible siloxane chain.

The synthesis of a number of tailored architectures of rhodamine dye-norbornene conjugate monomers and corresponding homopolymers derived from them is described. The impact of the monomer architecture on the mechanochromic, photochromic, and thermochromic properties of rhodamine-modified polynorbornenes is reported. Color changes were caused by the reversible interconversion between the "open" and "closed" spirolactam form of the covalently attached dye.

Immature manufacturing and sub-optimal control of quality attributes hinder the effective translation of nanoformulations for cancer treatment, being partially responsible for the scarce number of products on the market. The effect of the method of preparation on the performance of complex formulations such as bio-responsive nanomedicines needs further understanding. In this study, we investigated the the influence of the method of preparation on the characteristics and bio-responsiveness of doxorubicin-loaded redox-sensitive nanoparticles (DOX-SS-NPs), formed by a biocompatible cholesterol-based amphiphilic block copolymer (PC5MA-SS-PEO).

To overcome the critical limitations of liquid-electrolyte-based dye-sensitized solar cells, quasi-solid-state electrolytes have been explored as a means of addressing long-term device stability, albeit with comparatively low ionic conductivities and device performances. Although metal oxide additives have been shown to augment ionic conductivity, their propensity to aggregate into large crystalline particles upon high-heat annealing hinders their full potential in quasi-solid-state electrolytes. In this work, sonochemical processing has been successfully applied to generate fine CoO nanoparticles that are highly dispersible in a PAN:P(VP--VAc) polymer-blended gel electrolyte, even after calcination.

Biomimetic mineralization of collagen fibrils is an essential process because the mineralized collagen fibers constitute the basic building block of natural bone. To overcome the limited availability and high cost of the noncollagenous proteins (NCPs) that regulate the mineralization process of collagen, commercially available analogues were developed to replicate sequestration and templating functions of NCPs. The use of branched polymers in intrafibrillar mineralization applications has never been explored.

A potentially universal approach is presented for enzyme attachment to cellulose that significantly enhances enzyme stability while retaining high activity, and involves no chemical functionalization of cellulose. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was interlocked in cellulose to form a protein-friendly surface (named BSA-Paper), while also providing COOH and NH groups for subsequent attachment of enzymes. The desired enzyme is then mixed with additional BSA and interlocked on BSA-Paper.
