The Shiga Microalbuminuria Reduction Trial (SMART) showed the advantage of ARB over CCB beyond the blood pressure (BP)-lowering effect in reducing microalbuminuria. Castleman's disease is a rare atypical lymphoproliferative disorder. Renal manifestations, such as proteinuria, hematuria, and renal dysfunction, are common in Castleman's disease; however, a nephrotic syndrome rarely occurs. We have encountered an unusual case of Castleman's disease of the plasma cell type characterized by nephrotic syndrome because of glomerulopathy mimicking membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis.

Background: In Europeans and populations of European origin, several groups have recently identified novel type 2 diabetes susceptibility genes, including FTO, SLC30A8, HHEX, CDKAL1, CDKN2B, and IGF2BP2, none of which were in the list of functional candidates.

We isolated peptides that home to mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) from a phage library expressing random 7-mer peptides fused to a minor coat protein (pIII) of the M13 phage. An in vitro biopanning procedure yielded 113 phage plaques after five cycles of enrichment by incubation with isolated DRG neurons and two cycles of subtraction by exposure to irrelevant cell lines. Analyses of the sequences of this collection identified three peptide clones that occurred repeatedly during the biopanning procedure.

In men in the post-World War II birth cohort, that is, men aged 40 to 49 years, whites in the United States had significantly higher levels of intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries (IMT) than the Japanese in Japan (Electron-Beam Tomography and Risk Assessment Among Japanese and US Men in the Post World War II Birth Cohort [ERA JUMP] study). The difference remained after adjusting for traditional risk factors. Primary genetic effects are unlikely, given the degree to which IMT is increased in the Japanese who migrated to the United States.
