Aims: Increasing evidence suggests that CD4(+) T cells contribute to neovascularization in ischaemic tissue. However, the T cell subset responsible for neovascularization after ischaemia remains to be determined. Here, we investigated the role of Th17 cells secreting interleukin (IL)-17, a newly identified subset of CD4(+) T cells, in the neovascularization after murine hindlimb ischaemia.

Objective: Although typically high, the need for information varies between cancer patients. Few studies, however, have examined the factors that predict patient information needs. This study investigated the influence of different styles of adjustment to cancer on information needs.

Universal biases in self-perception: better and more human than average.

There is a well-established tendency for people to see themselves as better than average (self-enhancement), although the universality of this phenomenon is contested. Much less well-known is the tendency for people to see themselves as more human than average (self-humanizing). We examined these biases in six diverse nations: Australia, Germany, Israel, Japan, Singapore, and the USA.

Development of a rapid and detailed structural identification system with an on-line immobilized enzyme reactor integrated into LC-NMR.

Immobilized enzyme reactors (IMERs) integrated into an LC-NMR system were developed for rapid and detailed structural identification of enzymatic reaction products. An on-column enzymatic reaction was achieved for immobilized cytochrome-c and dog microsomes. After the reaction, these products were analyzed by LC-NMR without any work-up processes.

Development of an automated synthesis system for preparation of glucuronides using a solid-phase extraction column loaded with microsomes.

An automated synthesis system using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) system and column packed with octadecylsilica (ODS), which was coated with phospholipid and loaded with dog liver microsomes, was developed for synthesis of glucuronides. Preparation of the microsome-immobilized SPE column, glucuronidation of drugs to synthesize the glucuronides and elution of the products were performed by an automated synthesis system. The phospholipid-coated SPE column and then the microsome-immobilized SPE column were readily prepared by allowing a solution containing L-alpha-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine to flow through the SPE column, and then by recycling a buffer solution containing dog liver microsomes through the resulting phospholipid-coated SPE column.

Intranasal administration of a live non-pathogenic avian H5N1 influenza virus from a virus library confers protective immunity against H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection in mice: comparison of formulations and administration routes of vaccines.

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) would cause disasters worldwide. Various strategies against HPAIVs are required to control damage. It is thought that the use of non-pathogenic avian influenza viruses as live vaccines will be effective in an emergency, even though there might be some adverse effects, because small amounts of live vaccines will confer immunity to protect against HPAIV infection.

Rationale and design of assessment of lipophilic vs. hydrophilic statin therapy in acute myocardial infarction (the ALPS-AMI) study.

Background: Statins reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Although all statins are equally effective in secondary prevention, there might be certain differences in the effects of lipophilic and hydrophilic statins. Therefore, our aim is to compare the effectiveness of lipophilic atorvastatin and hydrophilic pravastatin in secondary prevention after AMI.

Conceptual design of experimental equipment for large-diameter NTD-Si.

An irradiation-experimental equipment for 12in neutron transmutation doping silicon (NTD-Si) was designed conceptually by using MCNP5 in order to improve the neutron flux distribution of the radial direction. As a result of the calculations, the neutron absorption reaction ratio of the circumference to the center could be limited within 1.09 using a thermal neutron filter that covers the surface of the silicon ingot.

Purification and characterization of the first archaeal glutamate decarboxylase from Pyrococcus horikoshii.

Glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) from the archaeon Pyrococcus horikoshii was successfully expressed and purified, with the aim of developing a hyperthermostable GAD for industrial applications. Its biochemical properties were different from those reported for other GADs. The enzyme had broad substrate specificity, and its optimum pH and temperature were pH 8.

Efficient expression of laccase gene from white-rot fungus Schizophyllum commune in a transgenic tobacco plant.

Ligninolytic enzymes produced by white-rot fungi are effective degraders of recalcitrant aromatic environmental pollutants. However, gene sequences of these enzymes are rich in CpG dinucleotides, which are particularly unfavorable to efficient expression in plants. In order to develop a phytoremediation technique with a ligninolytic enzyme-producing transgenic plant, laccase cDNA (scL) from white-rot fungus Schizophyllum commune was used as a model ligninolytic enzyme, and we attempted to obtain the efficient expression of scL in a transgenic tobacco plant by decreasing the CpG-dinucleotide motif content.

The contribution of antismoking advertising to quitting: intra- and interpersonal processes.

This study explored the roles of transportability-the tendency to become absorbed in a narrative-and interpersonal discussion in the use of televised antismoking advertising in attempts to quit smoking. We used data from a representative population survey of adults (n = 2,999), examining responses from current smokers (n = 594) and former smokers who had quit in the last 5 years (n = 167). Logistic regression analysis revealed that current and former smokers higher in transportability were more likely to recall an antismoking ad (OR = 1.

Language, meaning, and social cognition.

Social cognition is meant to examine the process of meaningful social interaction. Despite the central involvement of language in this process, language has not received the focal attention that it deserves. Conceptualizing meaningful social interaction as the process of construction and exchange of meaning, the authors argue that language can be productively construed as a semiotic tool, a tool for meaning making and exchange, and that language use can produce unintended consequences in its users.

Endothelial cell promotion of early liver and pancreas development.

Different steps of embryonic pancreas and liver development require inductive signals from endothelial cells. During liver development, interactions between newly specified hepatic endoderm cells and nascent endothelial cells are crucial for the endoderm's subsequent growth and morphogenesis into a liver bud. Reconstitution of endothelial cell stimulation of hepatic cell growth with embryonic tissue explants demonstrated that endothelial signalling occurs independent of the blood supply.

Induction of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte and antibody responses against highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection in mice by inoculation of apathogenic H5N1 influenza virus particles inactivated with formalin.

We investigated whether a vaccine derived from an apathogenic reassortant type A H5N1 influenza strain could induce immune responses in vivo that mediated protection from highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection in mice. After two subcutaneous immunizations with formalin-inactivated H5N1 whole virus particles (whole particle vaccine), significant killing specific for cells presenting a nucleoprotein peptide from the vaccine strain of the virus was observed. Similar vaccination with viruses treated with ether and formalin, which are commonly used for humans as ether-split vaccines, induced little or no cytotoxic T-cell response.

Complexities of measuring perfectionism: three popular perfectionism measures and their relations with eating disturbances and health behaviors in a female college student sample.

The present study investigated the relationships between three popular measures of perfectionism [the Eating Disorders Inventory - Perfectionism scale (EDI-P), the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS), and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS)] and measures of eating disturbances and health behaviors, in a sample of 248 female college students. Results indicated that the adaptiveness or maladaptiveness of certain perfectionism dimensions should still be questioned. Also, self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism (from the MPS) were consistently found to be the most important predictors of both eating disturbances and health behaviors.

Stereotypes help people connect with others in the community: a situated functional analysis of the stereotype consistency bias in communication.

Communicators tend to share more stereotype-consistent than stereotype-inconsistent information. The authors propose and test a situated functional model of this stereotype consistency bias: stereotype-consistent and inconsistent information differentially serve 2 central functions of communication--sharing information and regulating relationships; depending on the communication context, information seen to serve these different functions better is more likely communicated. Results showed that stereotype-consistent information is perceived as more socially connective but less informative than inconsistent information, and when the stereotype is perceived to be highly shared in the community, more stereotype-consistent than inconsistent information is communicated due to its greater social connectivity function.

From social talk to social action: shaping the social triad with emotion sharing.

Seemingly trivial social talk provides fertile ground for emotion sharing (a narrator and audience's realization that they experience the same emotional response toward a target), which in turn creates a coalition between the narrator and the audience, configures the narrator and audience's relationship with the target, and coordinates their target-directed action. In this article, the authors use 4 studies to investigate this thesis. In Studies 1 and 2--where participants rated scenarios in which narrators told them anecdotes--the authors found that when there was emotion sharing (a) participants were more bonded with narrators, (b) the narrator and audience's relationship with the target (as reflected in action tendencies) was determined by the emotionality of the anecdotes, and (c) they coordinated their target-directed actions.

Peptides coupled to the surface of a kind of liposome protect infection of influenza viruses.

In our previous study, OVA conjugated on the surface of a liposome, we termed Oleoyl liposome, which consisted of dioleoyl phosphatidyl choline, dioleoyl phosphatidyl ethanolamine, dioleoyl phosphatidyl glycerol acid and cholesterol in a 4:3:7:2 molar ratio, induced OVA-specific IgG antibody production but not OVA-specific IgE antibody production that is detrimental to the host. Directional coronary atherotomy - experimental use of single-blade cutting balloon.

Conceptual beliefs about human values and their implications: human nature beliefs predict value importance, value trade-offs, and responses to value-laden rhetoric.

Beliefs that may underlie the importance of human values were investigated in 4 studies, drawing on research that distinguishes natural-kind (natural), nominal-kind (conventional), and artifact (functional) beliefs. Values were best characterized by artifact and nominal-kind beliefs, as well as a natural-kind belief specific to the social domain, "human nature" (Studies 1 and 2). The extent to which values were considered central to human nature was associated with value importance in both Australia and Japan (Study 2), and experimentally manipulating human nature beliefs influenced value importance (Study 3).

Incomplete ventricular septal rupture following blunt chest trauma--a case report.

This report describes a case of traumatic incomplete rupture of the ventricular septum, a rare complication caused by blunt chest trauma. Although a serial ECG progressed its course similar to acute anteroseptal myocardial infarction in this case, there was little clinical clue of septal tear. The diagnosis was established by transthoracic echocardiography.
